RALFFERS 0 #1 August 22, 2008 Does anyone know anything about these things? - I need feedback. I've become a bit self-conscious about the way I walk, as well as not being happy with my posture and decided to do something about it; just hope its not a day late & dollar short.... I've tried stretching in the past - granted I didn't do it for too long (2 weeks) because it didn't seem to be getting anywhere & thus I was discouraged & frustrated, but nonetheless, I want to give it another shot. My motivations are twofold - I need to be more lose & limber so that I have a good body position when jumping/tunnel flying, but also, being more lose would help me walk better. It just dawned on me a couple of weeks ago that maybe I should try taking a muscle relaxer for "x" amount of time to see if it would help speedup the process of loosening my hamstrings. That said - I don't know enough about muscle relaxers and whether or not they are intended to be used for the above purpose. I do know that people with my condition do use muscle relaxers on a regular basis, but I think this is because C.P. comes in various forms and is (or isn't) severe on a case-to-case basis. I am fortunate enough to have gotten off easy; I don't have spasms or mobility issues of any sort - my hamstrings are just tight. Any knowledge or personal experience would be greatly appreciated; many of you are a part of the medical community & have real-world experience, & that's much better than just reading something from the internet. Tuna-Salad 0 #2 August 22, 2008 To my knowledge most muscle relaxers will almost put you in a vegitative state to the point you would not be able to stretch. Have you spoken to a doctor? Maybe someone at a gym could give you some advice, heat cool etc.. For what it's worth that is my $0.02Millions of my potential children died on your daughters' face last night. hungarianchick 0 #3 August 22, 2008 Yep, muscle relaxers don't just relax your muscles, but for the most part, they alter your consciousness to some extent. "I love cooking with wine. Sometimes I even put it in the food."

RastaRicanAir 0 #5 August 22, 2008 Yoga. Yeah, it's my stock answer. But have you tried it? I don't know the particulars of your condition, but a good teacher would be able to adapt sequences specific to what you need. Hell, when I do my full 70 minute sequence, probably 1/4 of it is ALL about the hamstrings. Not to mention the general increase in flexibility, and respiratory/circulatory (and yeah, psychological) benefits. I also think you'd find it infinitely less tedious -and therefore, easier to stick with- than just plain stretching. Just an "if it were me" here, but before starting a program of potentially habit-forming drugs with temporary benefits, I'd look into a few healthier habits first. RALFFERS 0 #6 August 22, 2008 I agree with you - I actually have thought (and posted about) yoga. Ideally I'd like to have an instructor work 1 on 1 with me because I do need a customized program. Yoga would be the healthier choice of anything, that's for sure - I am just trying to get info on all possible options.Dialogue/commentary between Divot, Twardo & myself - "from your first Oshkosh when the three of us were riding to or from one of
livendive 8 #7 August 22, 2008 They have the most frustrating side-effect imaginable on the sex life (or at least Flexeril does). dirtyB 0 #9 August 26, 2008 NO!! Muscle relaxers will put you flat on your back! I have chronic muscle spasms and am prescribed flexeril...I rarely take them unless I know I've got an entire weekend to devote to being out. Seriously, I agree with Robby...Yoga is your best bet. dixiegypsy 0 #10 August 26, 2008 Bikram (Hot) Yoga is my advice. It's 90 minutes long and held in a room where the temp. is about 102 degrees. The heat allows muscles to stretch easier. However, in a case like yours where you have serious problems of stretching, you need to make sure not to over do it in the room. Sometimes the heat gives people the Superman syndrome and makes them feel like they can exert their body more than it allows. So: Take baby steps. The more you go, the better it will get and the easier it will be. I HIGHLY recommend it! Oh yes, and to fix posture always stay conscious of your shoulders. (pick your shoulders up, back, then down is what my chorus teacher always taught us) Shoulders back always makes for better posture. Hope it helps "Love all. Trust few. ladydyver 0 #13 August 26, 2008 muscle relaxers are not going to help you .... honestly it is prescribed most of the time for people with an injury and for those having spasm.... yoga, stretching exercises, physical therapy, massage therapy......all will help you. taking a short cut with a pill won't. if you want to get limber it takes time.....and lots of work. Sometimes warming up the muscles prior to a workout will do wonders. I am recovering from acl surgery...I do better in the day if I have done my physical therapy. does it totally suck - fuck yes! do i still do it - yes, even though I don't want to. the main thing is to put your mind to your goal and achieve it. I am ahead in my therapy because I want to get back in the sky....that means I need to appreciate the small accomplishments that are made every couple of days. I am not trying to be a bitch so I apologize if I am coming off that way - its just that you will need to work at this over a long period of time to reach your goals. If it makes you feel any better, in my experience guys have a lot more problems with this than the chica's do. Hang in and talk to someone about the appropriate exercises that you need to be doing.
