Whats your favorite sporting moment and why?

Recommended Posts

For me it was the 1979 500cc British Motorcycling Grand Prix at Silverstone.

Barry Sheene and Kenny Roberts went at it hammer and tongs at the front. Barry even gave Kenny the V sign!

Kenny won the race by half a bike, it was a great race and since that day I was hooked on to bikes and racing. B|

Cal Ripkin, Jr. breaking the Iron Man baseball record. I am not sure the date, I just remember watching him circle the field, being applauded for his accomplishment. As all this was going on, I was sitting on the sofa with my hand on my wife's pregant belly and I felt my unborn daughter kick for the first time. I don't know why, but ever since then, Cal Ripkin's record is my favorite sports moment!:)

I have that game on tape.

I also have the Alabama - Miami Sugar Bowl national championship game on tape too. That is my all-time favorite. those fucking arrogant Miami Hurricane players wouldn't give us the time of day or the respect we deserved, and we jammed the ball up their asses all day. 34 - 13 Baby!!! B|

The past is the past...

What are you gonna do on the 30th with them Clemson Tigers...???

I am a Carolina Gamecock fan you know!!

Then we better get our heads together and cheer Alabama on! :D

I think Clemson will be favored, by the way, but if things continue to progress in Alabama's training camp this month, especially with the freshmen taking over starting slots, it could be a real interesting game!

1995 AL division series between the New York Yankees and the Seattle Mariners, especially Game 5. It was absolutely incredible.

The 2007 Fiesta Bowl would probably take second place, even though neither was "my" team. Also the 1985 Orange Bowl, the 1979 NBA Championship, and the most recent Super Bowl was pretty damned good too.

There's the 1980 U.S. Men's Hockey Team in the Olympics against Russia, which chokes me up every time I see replays. That's first, but not far behind that is Ray Bourque FINALLY winning the cup. I love those moments!

The 1991 World Series was played between the Minnesota Twins (95-67) of the American League and the Atlanta Braves (94-68) of the National League. The Series was, in some respects, similar to the 1987 World Series also played by the Minnesota Twins (against the St. Louis Cardinals), most notably in that the home team won all seven games. The 1991 World Series was ranked by ESPN to be the best ever played, with five of its games being decided by a single run, four games decided in the final at-bat and three games going into extra innings. With 69 innings in total, the 1991 World Series holds the current record for longest seven-game World Series ever (some of the early years had nine-game Series, extending longer).

Seven players appeared in both the 1987 and 1991 Series for the Twins; Kirby Puckett, Kent Hrbek, Greg Gagne, Dan Gladden, Gene Larkin, Randy Bush and Al Newman.

For the first time in history, both league champions had finished the previous season in last place. No league champion previously had ever finished the previous season in last place.

The battle between Steve Ovett and Stev Cram in the 80' Olympic for both the 800 and 1500m races - A stunning exhibition of tallent, the like of which have never been seen again.

As far as games go...this one takes the cake for me. I was not rooting for either team...but the end of that game was ridiculous. I was living in SF at the time and you could hear people screaming up and down the block. It was crazy.

Oh...and there is always Aaron Boones homerun in 2003. Probably not the most amazing home run in baseball history...but just the moment, the friends, the atmosphere I was in at the time makes that moment pretty unreal.

The moment Joan Benoit entered the olympic stadium in first place in the first ever women's marathon was a pretty powerful, emotional moment. It was awesome. I was a long distance runner at the time and knew about all the distance stars.

Yeah, David vs. Goliath with all sorts of shenanigans...it was freakin' beautiful! I had it on my last DVR and watched it a bunch o' times. Unfortunately, that machine didn't have an output jack of any sort, so I couldn't burn it to DVD before upgrading. I'm sure I can find a copy somewhere if I look hard enough though. B|

Wasn't Seb Coe involved as well in 1980?

Not much of a sports fan, but the most memorable moment (sadly) was being in the stands at the "Murph" when Roseanne sang the national anthem before the start of the Padre game.[:/]

Watching Secretariat blazing the field away at the Belmont by 30+ lengths, running against no one but the clock.

That was a performance of an athlete at the absolute peak of his powers; I read later in a book about great moments that none other than Jack Nicklaus said it was so impressive it moved him to tears.

Faster horses, younger women, older whiskey, more money.

Why do they call it "Tourist Season" if we can't shoot them?
