sartre 0 #1 August 4, 2008 I gave my daughter her first driving lesson yesterday Actually, she did really well, but it's so weird to me to see my daughter behind the wheel of a car!! She kept hitting the brake instead of the gas, but that's sooo much preferable to the other way around. Amazingly, I wasn't nervous at all, but I did keep cracking up at her crazy stops and starts. Then she'd have to stop because she'd start laughing too. Every time a car came anywhere in the vicinity (we were in a huge, mostly empty parking lot), she'd say, "OH GOD!" and hit the brakes. Right now she's convinced she'll never be able to drive on the streets with other cars, but I know she'll be fine. I'd be interested to hear others' stories of teaching their kiddos to drive...how do they get from diapers to driver's permits so quickly??
 kbordson 8 #2 August 4, 2008 Quote I'd be interested to hear others' stories of teaching their kiddos to drive...how do they get from diapers to driver's permits so quickly?? I taught my stepson to drive. So... his bad habits are my creation. I was stationed in South Dakota and the age of permits there is 14, so I would take him out on the back roads and teach him how to drive. When he went back to Wisconsin, his mother HATED being in the car with him (and he didn't like her being there either) and there was all kinds of nervous tension and white knuckles and yelling. But... when he was driving with me, he was calm, and (generally) would do as I recommended (you might want to slow down now... there's probably a cop up there) I liked teaching him. I think there should be a way to set up a gift registry to buy extra insurance on a driver when kids start turning 16. We'd all feel better. She said to me, "So, I gather, when I start driving I shouldn't be doing what you're doing now?" I reminded her that I've been driving for more than 20 years (yes, I started when I was nine ) but that, true, it is best to focus on driving and driving only behind the wheel.
