What if you did a tandem and then for some reason couldn't physically continue? Does that make your intentions and desires less valuable? I guess its just my opinion that I don't think a person who does one tandem is qualified as a skydiver, only because I definitely didn't consider myself one after three tandems, let alone one. let it be noted that I do see that there are exceptions to every 'rule'. but as you said, "It could be argued that, you are what you see yourself as, as opposed to how the rest of the world sees you.
