Insomnia Sucks

Recommended Posts

I feel for ya big time...I've suffered insomnia for about 10 years (and I'm only 26, ahhh!) I've been to countless doctors and tried just about everything under the sun both prescription and natural. If you need any advice or need to talk about it PM me. I know how frustrating it can be, especially when all your friends can fall asleep wherever their head lays....[:/]

I used to have a handle on life, but it broke

I just had about a month of insomnia where I would sleep for an hour or two, then be up an hour or two, and so on. It didnt matter if I took GABA (natural supplement) or Lunesta, neither kept me asleep for more than 2 hours. I was productive @ 3am either cleaning or making soup:D but it was very frustrating so I feel your pain.
This week, so far, I've been able to sleep through the night. What I've done different is that if I'm tired earlier than normal, I take advantage of it and go to sleep early. Also, I turned down the AC to make it cooler as I sleep. I haven't taken GABA or Lunesta this week either.
Good luck.

"Need a nap? Dimetapp!"

Most OTC sleep aids are just re-packaged antihistamines - the old-fashioned kind that make you drowsy. (So are most OTC anti-motion sickness pills, but I digress.)

Occasionally, if I've had a restless couple of nights (or maybe too much caffeine during the day), I'll take a dose of Benadryl (liquid works faster than pill) shortly before bedtime. Usually helps me get to sleep, and sleep thru the night.

Insomnia is really no fun. I've had it off and on for the past 5-6 years. My biggest problem is when I can't sleep I don't do anything productive I just waste the night away. I find myself aimlesly searching the internet which can turn into a huge waste of time. The only thing I've found that was interesting was this site http://www.digitalfuntown.com/. I guess they make all thier own shows or something but its pretty funny and better than looking at pointless videos on youtube all night.
Is there anything better than hitting a jump in the morning and then unwinding to the hilarious shows Digitalfuntown is nice enough to offer.

The solution is not sleep aids.
The solution is to find something to divert your mind for a couple of hours before your sleeptime.
In most latin countries, they do something at the end of the day that I found intriguing.... after work, everyone walks around el centro. I've often wondered if there is some mental process of "This is permission to turn it off."
You need to find your "permission."

Try an evening walk (not run) - just a nice easy "evening constitutional," a gentle bike ride, etc... then segue into something that you can totally concentrate on for a couple of hours that removes you from the outside world - on-line chess, poker, pool, reading a good book, etc.

Not everything works for everyone, but there is one thing for everyone... you just need to find out your own "turn it off switch." Good luck.
Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard.

I'm with ya. I made it 4 hours before I woke up the other night and 2 hours last night, and that's with taking Ambien. :S I know the problem is that I have too much on my mind, this is really a hellish week, but being able to sleep would make it so much better! Why is it that at the times we need the most sleep, we can't get any? I'm exhausted, but I can't sleep!

I'm with you. Not every night mind you, but once or twice a week.
I just cannot seem to "turn off" my brain.
Alcohol does not help, but 1.5mm of Lunesta will.
I get a 6month prescription of 3mg, and then cut them in half.

I tend to read until I fall asleep, but that only works 5'ish nights a week.

I've tried Bigun's way of poker, but then I go to bed mad b/c a bad beat, or happy/ excited b/c I won some $.

It sucks!
So I feel your pain.

Have you tried reading the DB Cooper thread in the "Skydiving History & Trivia" forum?
That always works for me.[:/]

I just had about a month of insomnia where I would sleep for an hour or two, then be up an hour or two, and so on.

Over the last year and a half, I accidentally trained my body to sleep 5 hours per night. I was doing it to keep from having some pretty disturbing dreams...instead of dealing with the cause of the dreams. So, now when I try to sleep at normal hours, I end up waking up at 3 AM and doing nothing for a several hours until I'm tired again. Of course, when I eventually fall back asleep at 6:00 I end up having the damn dreams again until I wake up at 7:00. I hate the subconscious.

Dream interpretation is pretty interesting. I used to have vivid dreams, would jot down on a pad as much detail I could capture, and had them interpreted. The meanings were different from the dreams. I learned a lot through them.
