Anyone using a HSA and high deductible health plan?

Recommended Posts

We just switched over to an HSA in June of this year. We gave our employees a choice. $3000 deduct. and we will pay 100% of the employee's insurance. If they choose the $1500 deduct. we will pay 80% Knowing my track record, i took the lower of the two.;):D I like the idea behind it from an employers standpoint, and with the option on the deductable, i like it from an employee standpoint.

I've got a $3,500 deductible HSA for me and my family.

I love it. I get that money as a write off on taxes. I basically pay cash for the visits. And I'm insured for higher-level events at a low monthly premium.

More people should be looking into these things.

We've had a HSA for 2 years. I like that it decreases my taxable income so I have an amount taken out of every check for it. I have a "credit card" for the account and I use that when I'm at the Pharmacy or at appointments that aren't covered by my insurance, like the Chiropractor. My deductible is paid for the year, so everything I do is free now. It's nice! The only bad part I've found is the higher deductible.

If you're going this route, do NOT go through your company plan - they rip you off on the price. I search online and get pretty good deals - $2700 deductible on myself, wife, and two children - $300/month. I contract for a company that offered a similar deal to a co-worker, his wife and one child for $750/month. I swear they were reselling someone else's package and marking it up.

Although our deductible is on the high side ($3k for an individual, or 6k if you have more then one person to cover), the premium is pretty good: zero for the employee! (company pays it all).

Makes it comparable to yours if we need to use the full amount of the deductible (pay no premium but spend 6K out of pocket, vs you spend 2700 out of pocket and had to pay 3600 in premiums) , but we save more if we dont spend as much (I think, right?)

Plus, our employer will contribute about $1000 to our HSA account.
