riddler 0 #26 July 10, 2008 Hey John - I'm guessing most people are voting against this in the poll because we don't live in Texas If it was a Colorado flag, I'd probably be OK with it in my neighborhood. FYI - I have a big "for sale" sign on my house right now. It's pointed directly at the new condos right across the street that are still for sale. On my sign, I have the words "No HOA!" Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

ltdiver 3 #30 July 10, 2008 What about painting the back side of your garage door with the colors you want? It's seen by you when the door is closed (from the inside) and by those at your house when it's open. It's not facing the street so the HOA has no dibs in how you paint it. ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon
skymama 37 #31 July 10, 2008 I have a feeling even the muted colors aren't going to fly. lawrocket 3 #32 July 10, 2008 Usually you have the right to do whatever you want with their home's appearance. Until they sign away their right with CCR's. In doing so you gave it up. In exchange for knowing your neighbor will keep the lawn mowed and car carcasses kept off of it, you can't paint your home as you wish. Its why I didn't buy a place with an HOA. My wife is hotter than your wife.
Beerlight 0 #33 July 10, 2008 Quote when you bought the place, you bought into the HOA poop. you have no one to blame but yourself. also, the flag is pretty jeff foxworthy.... you're better off not exposing yourself to all the redneck jokes. There's nothing redneck about our Texas flag! I have a HOA that's an ass too. I think I'll submit a request just like JR's and see how they respond.... BillyVance 34 #34 July 10, 2008 Since painting the Texas state flag colors on your garage door seems to be out, how about buying a giant Texas state flag and hanging it in the garage just behind the garage door, and putting it on display by leaving the door up, only while you're home though... azdiver 0 #35 July 10, 2008 Quote Quote You know Ive never really understood HA's. Thats probably because Ive lived in appartments my whole adult life, but something about an association that you pay into just to live there doesnt make much sense to me. So what I'm asking is this. What, exactly does your HA do for YOU? Why cant you paint your house any damn color you please? What could they do if you went against their "rules"? Just curious here as one day Ill own a house and could always use a little knowledge. They maintain a pool and clubhouse for resident's usage. Mow the greenbelt areas, maintain sidewalks, etc. They keep people from having unkempt yards, junk cars, etc. They hire the sheriff for police patrols and spray for mosquitoes. It does keep the neighborhood looking nice. It also keeps everyone looking boringly identical. If you violate their rules, they send a legal letter requesting that you come into compliance. If you don't respond, eventually, they can put a lien on your home. Then at some point in the future when you sell it, they take some of your cash for the trouble they went to rectifying the problem at their own expense. they can also take your house and sell it if you rack up enough penalties, meaning you would lose everything you had put into it equity and alllight travels faster than sound, that's why some people appear to be bright until you hear them speak
catfishhunter 2 #36 July 10, 2008 HOA's are a democracy. You don't like the way they are handling things vote them out. We just voted out 2 of the 4 people off our board. You can also take your pictures around the neighborhood and try to get enough folks to sign off on it and bring it to the next Home owners meeting and put it to a vote. I was surprised at some of the things that had happened before we moved in. I was really pissed to find out there used to be tennis courts and the fuckers ripped them out and put in Grass because most of the people at that time where to old to play tennis anymore (not that I play but I might have if we still had a court) MAKE EVERY DAY COUNT Life is Short and we never know how long we are going to have. Shotgun 1 #39 July 11, 2008 Quote Hey John - I'm guessing most people are voting against this in the poll because we don't live in Texas I've thought about putting a Texas flag up here at my home in SoCal, but I'm afraid someone will vandalize my house or something, since everyone out here seems to hate Texas. And I'm not sure what I would think about that garage door. I probably wouldn't care, since I don't concern myself too much with what my neighbors do to their houses. Though it does occur to me that what the neighbors do to their houses affects the value of my house, so I guess I care a little bit. It's funny though. In South Austin, the quirkier the better, so painting your home in crazy colors would fit right in. But where I live now, in tract-home-land, it would stick out like a sore thumb. riddler 0 #42 July 11, 2008 Quote In South Austin I love Austin. One day, I was walking downtown to Jamba Juice, to get my usual (original OJ, no ice). Outside, I walked by a 6'5" nordic-looking bodybuilder wearing a pink tutu with a thong who smiled flirtingly at me. A few seconds later, a 5'5" cowboy with a Texas drawl and a 10-gallon hat walked by and swatted him(?) on the butt with a rolled up newspaper while spouting through a mouthful of chew "hey, thare, sweet-cheeks!" JohnRich 4 #47 July 11, 2008 QuoteRe: "Property Values" That's the excuse that everyone utters for anything that doesn't suit their personal taste. But it's really all about their personal taste, and "property value" is just the convenient means of avoiding sounding judgmental. But can you actually prove to me how having a flag painted on MY garage door would affect YOUR property value if you lived, say, two houses down from me? Would all prospective home buyers be so darned offended driving by that garage that they would refuse to purchase a house in the neighborhood? I don't think so. A garage door is not like having junk cars in the front yard. Rant on. I'm surprised that this many skydivers would be against such a show of individuality. As skydivers, we're already leading our lives differently than everyone else. Individuality is something that skydivers respect and cherish. We don't judge others just because they have full-body tattoos, pierced eyebrows or orange hair. All we care about is their personality and their skydiving skills. So I'm surprised that these same freedom-loving free-to-be-different skydivers, would be so judgmental about a silly garage door paint scheme. I guess that once skydivers leave the drop zone and return home, they become ordinary sheeple just like everyone else. What happens at the DZ stays at the DZ. Otherwise, it's yuppies as usual. Rant off. Well, that might get this bumped over to Speaker's Corner...
