banesanura 1 #1 May 22, 2008 Her name is Sallie Mae and she's a bitch. I wake up every morning and she bends me over. Ugh. I tried to refinance-to lower the interest rate- but because my dumb ass went to a private school for the first year of college the only thing I can change it to is a variable interest rate. The loans were private loans and all that this school offered. I am the first to go to college in my family-Also I am the first generation born- my folks never went- and didn't have a clue- they were just happy that I was going to school. My parents wouldn't co-sign the loan- and my credit score at 18 was okay. The thing is - I didn't have a credit history other than a cell phone and small 1k credit card. I'm ranting because I hate her- and I was stupid at 18 and now 21 I fucked myself financially for a few years. Stupid me. FUCKKKKKKKKK! *bangs head against wall* I can't blame anyone except my dumb ass. Note to self: When I get older start a college fund for my kiddos. And educate them on the financial burdens of college BEFORE they sign.Best Girl Scout Ever.

TRUST me- I WILL NEVER make that same mistake again. EVER EVER!!!!!!!!! The whole education industry now have moved to recruiting kids in highschool and drilling into their heads all these false ideas. Plus these trade schools have started mocking the public college system and is used as a trap to make some $$Best Girl Scout Ever.
BIGUN 1,421 #4 May 22, 2008 Whereas, I thank Sallie Mae every day for giving me the opportunity to go to grad school.Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard.
peregrinerose 0 #5 May 22, 2008 Welcome to grown-up world. I got fucked too (my own fault). Refinanced my student loans at just a shade less than 8% interest. And then they dropped to like 5% within a year. When you're in debt for $126K, that's a big mistake.I busted my ass to pay mine off... lived on ramen noodles, drove a car with over 100K miles, lived cheap, paid the whole thing off in 7 years. Learn from your mistakes and make smarter ones next time. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
ffp1974 0 #6 May 22, 2008 I believe that college has turned away from education and toward a for big profit institution. Now it has been over 30 years since I was in college, but here are the differnces. We were on the quarter system, all books were free. I lived at home with my folks and went to school. I paid $ 275 per quarter and got graduated in 4 years. Now I have two kids in college, both are going to be in for 5 years. They are on the semester system and we pay around 3k per semester. Not counting books and room and board. Everyday we get something in the mail about college loans. The lending institutions make it so easy to get a loan, you don't have to start paying until you graduate. Yeah right, but the interest in accruing all while you are in college. banesanura 1 #7 May 22, 2008 I agree 100% Colleges come to highschools and "recruit" students. I remember my senior year of highschool speaking to these girls- they were bragging that college was 50k a year- and stated that since it was SO expensive it HAD to be good. Their parents foot the bill- and I feel bad for them.Best Girl Scout Ever.

This is what irks me- I work in the finance department- The standard of method of accounting hasn't changed- by why are they increasing the price to get the piece of paper to learn the same function from years before? I've taken accounting classes and we have to do p/l statments by hand/month end by hand- And I'm like WTF- everything is computerized with excel- or quick books-only mom and pops places do it by hand anymore- and even then they dish out the money for quick books. For fuck's sake- our CPA's who do our taxes at and HR block all they do is type in the numbers into the computer. I mean come on- what is my degree paying for? Data entry work? While yes- it is necessary for me to have a CPA to advance and I agree- but I think that increasing the cost is insane. Thats what is frustratingBest Girl Scout Ever. poe62 0 #10 May 22, 2008 I understand your pain, but I DO want to tell you congratulations for at least taking the steps to further your education. There's nothing better than exposing yourself to different ideas and -possibly-learning or disagreeing with some very new and exciting things. Granted, you can do this from home with a library card, but it's still something I think is important. Good luck with paying off the loans. Just take a deep breath everyday and go eat your ramen noodles like the rest of us. ~Nikki http://www.facebook.com/poe62 Irgity Dirgity
ffp1974 0 #11 May 22, 2008 I don't know how it is in other areas of the country, but here the emphasis is on building more buildings. To their preception, the more buildings you have the better institution you are. Plus you can hound your allumni to give money, so they will put the alumni's name on a building. Most institutions have an enormous staff, with tons of vice-presidents, provost, etc. All making temendous salaries. But what do they really do? One of my sons went to a junior college first. His grades and act gave him a free ride. All we paid for was food and lodging.
Nightingale 0 #12 May 22, 2008 Did you call other student loan companies to see about a consolidation loan? While Sallie Mae may only offer you a variable rate, another company may offer you something better, and Sallie Mae can't stop you from re-financing. DougH 270 #13 May 22, 2008 If they are private loans, and not federal loans, there isn't much out there. The is even less out there for people with no cosigners and limited credit history (read: every single college student). My private loans give me a good railing and no reach around every pay day myself. Tornolf 0 #14 May 22, 2008 QuoteI remember my senior year of highschool speaking to these girls- they were bragging that college was 50k a year- and stated that since it was SO expensive it HAD to be good. It's the other way around. Most of the schools I was looking at were $40-50k + room and board. Every single one said the same thing: "get accepted and we'll find a way for you to go here." I was looking at small, highly funded science based schools though.A waddling elephant seal is the cutest thing in the entire world. -TJ
banesanura 1 #15 May 22, 2008 Private loans suck! I can understand if I want to be in computer science -as technology improves- or in medicine- justifying the tuition hike- to make up for new computers/training But for accounting- math-business- finance- I mean come on-? But that was my boo boo- I'm the tard. I wouldn't mind if my grad program raped me- But thank god I didn't finish my BS at the private school- I can't the handle double penetration to my purse. So back to junior college I go- (I have excellent grades- and in a year I can get myself a nice ride to a decent public college)Best Girl Scout Ever. riddler 0 #24 May 22, 2008 Same story here. First in my family to get a four-year degree. $35K in student loans - this was 15 years ago, when that was a lot of money Took me nine years to pay them all off. I don't regret it, and in a few years, neither will you. The total increased income over your lifetime makes it pay for itself several times over. But yeah, what a stupid system. The governments in most first-world countries pay for their best students to go to college - an investment in the education of our citizens pays for itself several times over, too. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
