Whiskeyboi 0 #27 May 23, 2008 Ok…so…I work in a financial aid office at a college in Chicago. (Admitting that may get me thrown into a spinning propeller.) Sallie Mae…I should probably stay as neutral as possible on this…let me just say there are better companies out there, but there are a few that are MUCH worse. It’s easy for someone to say “caveat emptor”, but how many of us really are ready for college at 18? (Lord knows I wasn’t.) The student loan industry is going through some really nasty changes these days. (Economy, credit crunch, mortgage industry crash, etc.) The government is making changes to the loan programs – some are good, and some are completely self-serving. If you’re currently in college, starting July 1 the Fed is raising the amount of money kids can take out in subsidized and unsubsidized loans. (Google H.R. 5715) While it is still debt, it’ll help a bit in filling the tuition gap and might save some folks from having to go the private loan route. If you’re a student in Illinois, there’s some other programs coming up also. For what it’s worth, I have – on MANY occasions – talked a student out of going to school if they had no clue how they were gonna pay for it. I don’t want people to screw up college like I did, but it’s easier to rebound from that than not paying back loans, going into default, and completely screwing your credit for the next 7-10 years. Financial aid in college can be nasty all around…might explain why I jumped out of a plane. If anyone needs help with filling out a FAFSA or anything, lemme know. I'm not good for much, so it's nice to have some function. Financial aid is daunting as hell…which is why I didn’t bother with it the first time around. Then again…that also contributed to me not finishing school. (Oh, hindsight…how you mock me.) Make sacrifices to the deferment and forbearance gods only as necessary. Oh…and don’t tell my boss I wrote anything here.
banesanura 1 #28 May 23, 2008 Some one needs a spanking! Here's the problem- I've already had them put a foreberance on my account for 6 months when I relocated to GA- I was accepted at the university later to find out that I was to move to Chicago. Now I moved here mid- semester and inorder to defer my repayment I have to be enrolled at least part time- I've been in Chicago for 3 weeks now- enrollment has already ended for the summer- and I now have to wait until fall to start classes- (this is paying out of pocket for these classes) So until the fall comes- I go into repayment- Perhaps I should start beating some more men to make up for the loss Best Girl Scout Ever. iluvtofly 0 #29 May 23, 2008 I feel your pain. Went to college for 4 years, got my bachelors spent a summer working several jobs in the field and decided that i hated what I had my degree in. Now I'm working a job that I absolutely love but it pays jack shit and I'm getting my loans deffered while I take care of some other financial stuff. But hey...at least I finally found a job that I love.
Whiskeyboi 0 #30 May 23, 2008 Quote Some one needs a spanking! cause i work in financial aid? or cause i work in financial aid and am actually trying to be helpful? Quote I now have to wait until fall to start classes- Without naming schools, etc. - no summer classes? Or community college to pick up a couple cost-effective classes? Long as they transfer over and the schools have the same accrediting body. There are plenty of schools with open enrollment out there. Quote (this is paying out of pocket for these classes) Independent cause of age or family and screwed by the EFC on your student aid report? Quote So until the fall comes- I go into repayment- Depending on whether they're private loans, Stafford loans, or a combo of both...you SHOULD be able to get a continued forbearance...just have to apply all over again. (Or actually, there are several types of forbearance you can apply for.) And just make sure they know when you're back in school to get that in-school deferment slapped back on. If you've been in contact with them and are trying to do the right thing, they'll meet you a hell of a lot closer than if you ignore their mail and calls...and please tell me you're at least majoring in something beneficial... Whiskeyboi 0 #31 May 23, 2008 QuoteThe loans were private loans and all that this school offered. Almost forgot...that can be indicative of a couple of things. But if they offered ANY type of federal aid without giving you the option for federal loans...that's just damn sketchy. might need to look into the reputability of the school. I've seen one case similar to what i described above...and it worked out in the student's favor. Again...you didn't hear that from me...
banesanura 1 #32 May 23, 2008 I have 4 loans out with all different interest rates- all private CELP loans. The government for some reason considers me dependent on fafsa- under 21- My parents wouldn't fork over their SS numbers to get it filled out- I had to wait until tax time and pull off a 007 mission to take their SSN numbers. I work full time- but I have been hesitant to take online classes- plus I don't want to put any more on my credit cards..... I have to touch base with them again- or I can always take their numbers- again. I will talk with Sallie Mae as I went into repayment this month.Best Girl Scout Ever. banesanura 1 #33 May 23, 2008 Maybe I should quit my job and try to put my way though college by being a stripper! hahahhahahahahahhaha I'm so kidding. But I AM curious as to how many strippers actually complete college. My older sister was a stripper- but then again she also was a college student. Now- she works at the grocery store- without her dignity- and education. So much for men helping her out with her education! hahahahhahahahahh Best Girl Scout Ever. Whiskeyboi 0 #34 May 23, 2008 Quote all private CELP loans. Dear, God...CELP loans? So...international studies or one of those hippie art majors? Quote The government for some reason considers me dependent on fafsa- under 21- My parents wouldn't fork over their SS numbers to get it filled out- Worse...the gov. considers you dependent until you hit 24. You'd be independent and probably qualify for some real aid if you'd marry a dirt poor guy...or have a kid that you would support. I'm sure SOMEBODY in these forums would vounteer and take one for the team for ya.

I pay $75/credit hour and spread the tuition over 3 months every semester with no finance charges. So i'm not sure where exactly i'm trapped.... Only reason i even considered the student loan was to have the money for more jumping...but after reading the small print, i was smart enough to not do that. ___________________________________________ meow I get a Mike hug!
