Advice?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys

Just been having long nights lately. I can't stop thinking that I'll end up having a job that I hate. I'm 22 right now and I just finished my bachelors in marketing. I'm probably going to go on and do a masters in international marketing. It's all cool and all, I have a good average and I'll probably get a good job in it. The thing is... I'm not sure this is something that I'll enjoy doing for the rest of my life. I wouldn't want to live the kind of life where I have a job that I hate going to. You might be wondering by now what is it that I would like to do. Well to some people it might seem kinda silly, but I've always wanted to be in the entertainment industry. Mostly I've always wanted to be an actor. But I also love anything that has to do with production of filmmaking. That's something that I would probably wake up early every day to do. But the thins is that I don't have many chances to achieve any of my dreams where I live. I live in Puerto Rico and there are very little, if no opportunities to do what I want. I've always wanted to move to the states to pursue that dream. But it's way easier said than done, specially if you have no money to do it and no relatives to stay with. Basically I'm stuck in this little island(which I think is great and consider my home). This is something that not many people know about me. I don't normally talk about this to anyone of my friends cause I doubt that they'll really understand. This new love that I have in skydiving has obviously brought with it a whole new group of people that I've met in the DZ. I've been reading a lot in the forums and I've noticed that the skydiving community is very supportive and I would just like to know if anyone has any advice for me. What do they think that could be done to get out of this Island to pursue my dreams. Any suggestions will be very appreciated. I don't mean to sound desperate and if I have it wasn't at all the way I was feeling... Maybe just a little bit.

Would you be interested in doing marketing for movies or tv?

Figure out what you like to do, what you have talent at, what you have training/skills in. Try not to make $$$ a factor at all in your decision.

"I'm not sure this is something that I'll enjoy doing for the rest of my life."

You can say that about anything you start.

Realize that once you start you are not required by either the laws of God or man to continue until death in the same job, the same relationship, the same career, the same sport.

There are always choices... one choice is to make no changes... there are many others...

At 22, my sister (edit: without a degree) left for California with little more than a dream of working behind the scenes on movie sets and enough gas and food money to get there. She met a couple of other girls "pursuing" their dreams and they teamed up and lived in a garage. The other two bailed cause it didn't happen fast enough for them and they wanted in front of the camera. She stayed, networked and worked twice as much. Today, she has three personal movie credit listings (her name is actually in the credits list). She eventually came back and had enough money to open her own restaurant. At 46, she is retired and going back to college. You gonna talk about it or do it?

So you, along with 600,000 other graduates thought it would be a GREAT idea to get your BA in Marketing (What an original idea), and now you're just not sure?????

Not slamming you - just kidding!

I've known 40, 50, and 60 year old people who still don't know what they want to do with their lives. Relax!!

Do the thing that will make you happy - as I've told many people, "The degree can get you in the door, but your EDUCATION will help you find what you want." Don't automatically assume you have to be a "marketer" - If I recall, both Garth Brooks and Reba McIntyre have marketing degrees. Think about that.

Thank you. I'm very proud of her drive and determination. At one point, she had networked her way pretty deep into the movie set community and met numerous celebrities. Being a young skydiver and knowing that one of my "heros" was Dar Robinson, she managed to get him to call me for my birthday. We chatted for a few minutes, he was encouraging about skydiving and I thanked him for the B'day call. One of the best B'day presents I ever got.

edit: wonder how many people know that Harrison Ford had a small bit part in American Graffitti, but afterwards had difficulty finding acting work for a long time. He changed careers while pursuing his dream and worked as a movie set carpenter for many years before his next break.
