banesanura 1 #1 May 27, 2008 My mother is very young still- she's 39 years old- this weekend advised me that she have absolutley no desire to skydive. She never answered my question as to why she won't do it. Me: Mom- when I get a few hundred jumps - will you go skydiving with me? Mom: No Me: why? Mom: Because who is going to take care of the babies? (I have twin siblings that are about 3 years old) Me: You aren't going to bounce- chances are extremely extremely small- you have more risk of being injured when you drive your car. Mom: I just don't want to do it Me: why? You haven't answered my question. Mom: Daisy- I will go skydiving when you are ready to put me in an old folks home. Me: Well start packing up! My question is: What do people fear about this sport? - why don't they just try a tandem once? I know media doesn't do anything to help. I am just so confused about why someone would totally object to just trying it?Best Girl Scout Ever.
Phillbo 11 #2 May 27, 2008 It's not for everyone... Most people just don't have the desire to do it. Fear is the biggest reason I'd bet.
DougH 270 #3 May 27, 2008 Maybe she just doesn't want to! Is that hard to believe? People find it hard to believe that we would want to skydive, so it should be easy for us to understand that many people just don't want to."The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P
grannyinthesky 0 #4 May 27, 2008 Have you had her come to the dropzone to see how much fun we have when we jump?"safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490
Thanatos340 1 #5 May 27, 2008 This sport is NOT for everyone. Simple as that. Nothing wrong with those that do not want to Jump (In fact there may actually more likely be something wrong with those that DO want to jump). There are lots of things that I have never tried and have no desire to try. I am sure that is true for most people and for a lot of those people this includes Skydiving. Oh and forget about that whole Driving is more dangerous than Skydiving Crap. That is a load of bullshit. Almost everyone I ever met either drives and/or ride in a car. In my lifetime I have only known 5 people that died in car wrecks. I lost that many friends in skydiving in a year. Skydiving is MUCH more dangerous than Driving, Dont ever forget that. Shotgun 1 #6 May 27, 2008 After having a few friends get killed or seriously injured in this sport, I quit trying to talk other people into jumping. If someone doesn't just have a burning desire to try skydiving, it's probably not worth the risk.
Icon134 0 #7 May 27, 2008 I don't have an answer but I know that neither of my parents have ever been interested in doing a skydive and I'm quite content with that... now my dad does enjoy flying... so I invited him to come out for an observer ride and to hang out and watch jumping for an hour or two... he did that and seemed to enjoy watching me jump out (while taking a few pictures from the copilot's seat) and it would seem that my mom is considering doing that next time they come out... I'm glad they are willing to come out and share at least a part of it with me... Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife...
Darius11 12 #8 May 27, 2008 QuoteMe: You aren't going to bounce- chances are extremely extremely small- you have more risk of being injured when you drive your car. The reality is that Skydiving is much more dangerous then driving a car IMHO. I know a lot more people who drive then Skydive yet a lot more skydivers end up getting killed or hurt. I always try to make people understand that Skydiving is magical. I still can’t put my mind around it. It is a great feeling but i also let people know there is a real risk. If I know the current numbers I tell them and remind them that the numbers are fatalities and do not include injured. Give the people the correct information let them make the decision. The last thing I would want in my head is me telling a friend that it is safer then riding a bike and have them get hurt or worst killed.I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not." - Kurt Cobain
banesanura 1 #9 May 27, 2008 I take the train everyday to work- the only time I drive is to the drop zone. I am in a car only on the weekends. I love public transportation. Oh- and I have been rear ended every year while driving. Sucks- my ford focus is a trooper. (nick named the drunk tank) I am not saying skydiving isn't dangerous- but I should have worded that better in the initial post. The thought I meant to express: We do alot of things that are dangerous- Example- driving- eat a shit ton of mcdonalds- smoke cigarrettes-date weirdos-drink to much sometimes- watch food cook in the microwave-etc... Maybe I'm the weird one- I would try pretty much anything and then determine if I have the desire to do it again- except for drugs- drinking is enough. Right now for upcoming desires: high rise window washing and eating fire.Best Girl Scout Ever.
peregrinerose 0 #10 May 27, 2008 I could not have less desire in the world to golf. Nothing about it appeals to me. I'm not afraid to do it, too poor to do it, or have a lack of time to do it, I have friends that golf and love it, but it just doesn't appeal to me at all. How is that any different from your mom? And don't ever try to talk someone into skydiving. The reality is, you can do everything right and still die or be seriously injured (which may be even worse than just plain old dying). If someone doesn't want to do it or have that desire, and you convince them to give it a whirl so they do it to appease you, how will you feel when they are hurt? They say that if you are in the sport long enough, you will see a fatality and know someone that goes in. I always hoped that I'd be the exception to the rule, but that's not how things worked out. Anyone can die doing this. Even you. Even your mom. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
Blue42 0 #11 May 27, 2008 Actually, I have spent many moments trying to figure out what is wrong with me for wanting to skydive. I can't give a rational answer for wanting to, and I know that there are risks. I don't want to be injured or die. So then, why do I want to do it so badly? It doesn't make sense. I have a lot to live for, but I just wanna. Sometimes I think that I am just on some crazy ego trip or something . . . What are we trying to prove? Carpe Diem! mamajumps 0 #12 May 27, 2008 Being that your a new jumper, your in that phase that Im sure most of us went thru, Lord knows I did. The phase that you want to tell the whole world about this magical new thing you discovered that is so much more than a sport. In fact, even after being in the sport 5 years, I will still tell anyone who will listen about how great it is. But in the reality, it is just another extreme sport, just to most of us who do it, it is a lifestyle. Be content that your mom doesnt want too. Mine doesnt either. I whole heartedly agree that it is something I think should be tried before kicking the bucket, but again in reality it isnt for everyone. And I agree with the others who said that it is much more dangerous than driving a car. Skydiving is an amazing thing, I hope to be jumping well into my senior age (with all of my kids who also want to jump). But in reality, in skydiving, you can do everything right and still die. I still have low jump numbers b/c I am a single mom, I can only make it to the DZ about once a month. Skydiving is only everything (well 2nd to evrything for me) for a select few of us.... banesanura 1 #13 May 27, 2008 Damn! You got me thinking now. To be honest- I am still a student but I started questioning my sanity and why I do it. I get scared shitless at the door but in free fall it goes away-I can't explain why I like doing it. Me and my car (and wallet) always end up at the dz on the weekend. Oh- I just want her to try a tandem- not go through AFF....Best Girl Scout Ever.

happythoughts 0 #15 May 27, 2008 There are people who really want to skydive, and there are people who really don't want to. Trying to move people from one group to the other is a bad idea. Let it go. Your mom accepts your skydiving as part of being you, and that is cool. Accept your mom for who she is and what she wants. That is fair.
