Thanatos340 1 #51 May 28, 2008 Try this: 200,000,000 Licensed Drivers. 40,000 of them will Die every year on average in auto accidents. 35,000 Licensed Skydivers. 30 of them will die every year on average. Sounds like driving is a HELL of a lot safer to me. This argument has been beat to death in other threads. Stats can be twisted to show whatever you want them to show. If anyone really believes that skydiving is safer than Driving, Please let me know if it looks like we will be on the same load so that I can scratch off because I really try to avoid being in the air with people that lack basic common sense. Edit: also please note that the only people you will usually hear making the foolish argument that Skydiving is safer than Driving are generally people with less than 100 jumps and relatively short time in the sport. woady 0 #66 May 28, 2008 Quote I can see his argument about disagreeing with the comparison. You compared the total number of skydives with the number of drivers, If you had compared the number of skydivers to the number or drivers OR the total number of skydives to the total number of car trips it would be more comparable. Then you factor in the fatality ratios and woala! You've got yourself a more solid argument. Either way, good job on posting the info. It shows effort on your part to make a valid comparison. Thank you. Take for instance that famous free climber that climbed deadly mountains with NO safety equipment for YEARS, how did he die? In a car accident. Not saying cars are more dangerous than rockclimbing, but when we let our guard down is when we let things happen, whether Skydiving or driving a car.You know what's similar between Cops and Firefighters? They both wanna be firefighters.
woady 0 #67 May 28, 2008 QuoteTry this: also please note that the only people you will usually hear making the foolish argument that Skydiving is safer than Driving are generally people with less than 100 jumps and relatively short time in the sport. That would be an interesting statistic to find out. What are fatality rate of people with under 100 jumps to those over 100. I don't think that is equatable because you don't know how many are under and over 100 jumps. However, I will say that I'd be willing to bet that an influencing factor would definitely be that people with over 100 or even 500 jumps are much more prone to injury or death because they've done the simple basics and try the free flying and swooping, which I definitely hope to get into. On another note you it could be safer if you have over 100 as experience is the worst teacher of all, it gives the test before the lesson is learned. How about everyone just be safe doing both? Jager is like watching a gay porn, you don't know what your getting into until its too late...except I only like jager, I ain't going to lie to ya.You know what's similar between Cops and Firefighters? banesanura 1 #69 May 28, 2008 When we were talking about stats- I was referring to the ONE time trandem jumper deaths versus driving. But okay- I won't go there. I will drop it. Any one know how many tandems there are in a year? When I made the reference to the car- I was using it as a point that there are other risks in our everday lives and ONE tandem won't send her over the deep end. Jager gets me into trouble. aresye 0 #71 May 28, 2008 Interesting argument. From my personal experience though, I've had more close calls driving to the drop zone, than during my actual jumps. It's like my instructor said to me, "Skydiving can be as safe, or as dangerous and you make it to be."Skydiving: You either learn from other's mistakes, or they'll learn from yours. Baksteen 84 #72 May 28, 2008 1) statistics can be made to show whatever you want them to. 2) Skydiving and driving do have something in common; you can make either as unsafe as you want to. i.e. some kid getting a Lotus upon getting their licence, whether car or canopy - they're not ready. Either activity has inherent risks, it doesn't really matter which one offers the greatest risk of killing yourself. Just use your common sense so that you do not become a statistic."That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom
Jewels 0 #73 May 28, 2008 All of the actual stats aside, I think that perceived risk plays a bigger role than actual risk for a lot of people who are afraid to jump. It doesn't necessarily matter how many people actually died last year to the whuffo who is being asked to go out the door of a plane with someone who is most likely a stranger and gear that they may or may not trust. That's a big, unnatural step. I still have some door fear and right at that ready-to-go moment, I don't give a RIP about how many people died behind the wheel as opposed to how many died while jumping. All I know right then is that I wasn't made to fly and yet I'm deliberately going out anyway.TPM Sister #
