What is the strangest thing you've eaten?

Recommended Posts

About 8 years ago now... I had some "mystery steaks." My neighbor bought some "steaks" from a guy that came into his store to sell them.
He ate one.... was concerned....
He gave me one, I cooked it and ate it.... more concern.
We discussed.... He said he didn't want them so he gave them to me.
I'm like sweet!!! Free "steaks." I ate the rest over that next week or so. Not sure what they were, but marinated and grilled........ good free "steaks."

Is there any part of an animal that doesn't get eaten?

At my previous job, some pathologist had cut sections of a sausage, enlarged the microscopic image on a beamer and proceeded to give us a crash course in tissue histology and organ recognition.

It was very instructive.
Among other things we encountered bone, gristle, intestine, heart, liver, lung, urethra, muscle and in one case even a bit of stomach with still a bit of the pig's last meal in it.

That reminds me of the time I picked up a package of chorizo at the supermarket. I glanced at the ingredients, expecting to see the general description of "beef" or "pork". When I got to "lymph nodes" and "salivary glands" I paused and placed it back on the shelf. I love the stuff but that was too much information at that time.

Cockroaches... live.....its more of a mental struggle than anything....movement....ughhghhghghghghhhghgh

i have eaten them suateed. The only thing i have eaten live was frog in China. I picked out my Guinea Pig if that counts

Either way that's still hard to break the mental barrier of being able to consume something that was just alive.

When I visit my family in Mexico- they slotter pigs in the farm in front of everyone.

Watching something die is a chilling experience- even if it's a pig....It seems surreal....and to see your family members do it....man....

I personally don't think I could kill my own pig, chicken, or anything.....bugs seem less harmless to eat....

And did you like it?

I am in Jordan and in many of the restaurants, lamb's brain is on the menu, so I thought I'd try it. It came either fried or sauteed with garlic and butter. Since everything tastes good with garlic and butter, that's what I had. The garlic was overpowering - hard to tell what it actually tasted like. It wasn't bad, but I need to try it fried now.

Monk fish liver (yes), sea urchin genitalia (yes), jelly fish (no), sweat breads (beef thymus, yes), beef heart (yes), beef and pork tongue (yes), tripe (stomache, I love a good bowl of menudo or pho), steak tartare (definitely; my favorite modern french joint grinds up a fillet mignon), carpacio, iberian acorn ham...

Wuss :P

Myself, I was actually rather disappointed when it turned out that we wouldn't have sausages for lunch when the lecture was over after all. Turned out the secretaries were having a bit of a laugh at our expense, but didn't want to get stuck with tons of uneaten sausage rolls (Dutch speakers: broodjes rookworst-van-de-Hema)
