Will all rigs accept AAD's?

Recommended Posts

I just bought a Javelin J-1. manufactured 92 for my second rig and wondering if it will take a cypress/vigil, or might it need to go to the manufacturer for alteration?

All containers built in the US starting in 1993 came Cypres ready. Ask the seller if your "new" one is or not.

You don't have to send it back to the manufacturer for the retrofit if it isn't. Any rigger handy with a sewing machine can do it; most lofts have at least one or two retrofit kits laying around. Shouldn't be very expensive to have it done (less than US$100).

Thanks lisa!

Bought my first rig new and custom.....didnt have to worry about anything. This whole (used) container thing has me asking a lot of questions I forgot to ask before I bought it. Part of the fun, learning process, and what the hell....for a back up rig WHY NOT!

Thanks again.

Actually, only a Master rigger approved by Airtec can legally do a field alteration to make a container Cypres ready. As far as I know Vigil has no similar program in place. They have stated in the past that it can go in a Cypres ready rig. BUT, legally as I understand it, the manufacturer gives the ultimate approval of whether any said rig with any particular components can take a Vigil. As I understand in the very near future Vigil will be supplying components as Airtec does. An order form may have a check box for Vigil or Cypres components. The alteration to a Vigil will still need manufacuturers approval and a master rigger.

Didn't know that, thanks.

How does a rigger go about getting approved by Airtec to do the retrofit? Since the setup comes standard on all rigs, is it still considered an alteration?

"The reliable automatic opening of a reserve container results form the interaction of the AAD, the rig with the reserve and the correct installation of the AAD. Our co-operation with all rig manufacturers world wide results in detailed and well documented installation instructions for the CYPRES to ensure the best possible performance of the automatic reserve container opening.

CYPRES MUST ONLY BE INSTALLED BY A QUALIFIED RIGGER WHO HAS BEEN AUTHORIZED BY AIRTEC FOR SUCH INSTALLATION. IN RIGS WITH CYPRES SET-UP, CYPRES CAN BE MOUNTED BY ANY RIGGER OR RESERVE PACKER.

Definitions:
Installation: Doing a retrofit includes, sewing the pouch, cutter elastic(s), and cable housings into a container without CYPRES Set-up.
Mounting: Assembling the CYPRES into a container with an existing approved set-up.

While searching this area you will find useful information regarding the mounting of CYPRES, packing the reserve and some help for the battery change of CYPRES 1. CYPRES 2 does not need a battery change, the 4 and 8 year maintenance ensures an unlimited and free power supply of CYPRES 2 for its entire lifetime.
The Packer’s Checklist contains detailed information on nearly all existing rigs to verify the correct installation of the CYPRES set-up.
The Rigger’s Guide enables the certified Rigger to retrofit a rig with a CYPRES set-up.
Changing the container is no problem with CYPRES."

In the U.S. they considered it an alteration and required a Maser Rigger who had passed Airtec's written test. This applies to installing the pocket, channel, cutter elastic, control unit pocket. As above "mounting" a cypres in an already cypres ready rig can be done by any rigger. At one point in the U.S. the FAA was trying to interpret "mounting" a cypres as an alteration requiring a master rigger. PIA lobbied against that and got that interpretation reversed.

Last I knew a Master Rigger had to take a written test and submit it to Airtec to be approved to do the field alterations. I assume that's still the case but since most have already been converted I doubt if any riggers have gotten the approval recently. Would have to call SSK to find out specific procedure now to be able to install the pocket. The installation manual had specific instructions for each rig.

In the US the local MIDO that oversees the TSO holder will accept the manufacturers "minor change" paper work to smooth this process. Been ther done that!
