Packing for yourself!

Recommended Posts

I know I'm going to get a lot of comments about how I should learn to pack and I know that and I'm learning. I have a demo 190 Saber 2 from PD, last weekend I had one of the regular packers pack it for me the 1st time and it opened and flew great, I think I might have to get one of these! After that jump, there was still only 1 packer at the DZ and she said she was too busy with the staff to pack for me, no problem so I asked one of the experienced guys to help me at least get it in the bag which he did no problem. I stowed the lines and put it in the container, when I opened I had line twist, kicked out and all was good, I know it was probably my fault.

Here's where the problem starts. The guy that had helped before was now packing for a few other people and said he didn't mind packing for me, so I set the breaks and cocked the pilot chute and said thanks. I signed up for the last load, as luck would have it never happened because there wasn't enough jumpers. I paid said packer $15 for 1 and 1/2 pack jobs and had a few beers. (yes they were from the case I bought)

PD has a really cool packing video online so I downloaded it and decided to practice packing here at home tonight. Moved the furniture around and opened the pack job. Hmmmmm slider is about 4" from the stops, that probably would have hurt. Looked some more and one of the breaks wasn't set. Hmmmmm again....looked some more and the pilot chute wasn't cocked!!! Now I'm pissed!!! I get along very well with this guy but now I just want to break his fuckin nose!!!!

Umm...so he decided to unstow a brake and uncock your pilot chute?

And how did you open the main? Did you perhaps pull the hackey on the pilot chute? You do realize that could've uncocked the pilot chute...

The slider could've moved when you took the canopy out, doesn't mean he packed it that way.

You pay your money, you take your chances. If you don't like his packing style, don't use him anymore. Simple really....

My rules when using packers:

1) "You pays your money, you takes your chances."
:)
2) ALWAYS set your own brakes.

I set my brakes before I ever let go of the toggles anyway, as it prevents twists in the brake lines which reduces wear and tear.

My advice to you would be to note those things on a piece of paper so you don't forget, and mention them calmly to the guy who packed for you. How much experience does the guy have?

You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.

Correctly? Maybe you didn't quite pull the "loop in which you stow the toggle" (cat's eye) through the small metal ring?

Did you check your brake setting? This is very easy: Set your brake and stow the excess brake line. Simply grab the steering line somewhere above the riser and yank it sharply. If nothing happens you're good to go.

If you cannot pack a canopy after 30 jumps... and you also have an A license,,, find a sport where your life does not depend on someone making sure you have a canopy over your head after an uneventful freefall. Learn to do it yourself and quite fucking complaining about it. Pack your own shit or go sit on a couch. Tired of hearing people complain about crap that they, themselves, are completly responsible for.
You want to skydive? Take some freaking resposibility and learn the damn ropes or go fucking bowling instead.

Very direct but true. I did my packing practice on a slippery canopy... no better way to learn it proper (with a lot of cursing). I am not allowed to pack my own jumps yet, but I practice in between on not needed canopies, so that I am proficient. I would prefer jumping my own packjobs after I get my license....if something goes wrong, nobody else to blame then me.

I've always packed for myself, with the only exceptions being when I was a big way organizer who needed to spend time in the video room reviewing the jump video while the rest of the jumpers packed up.

You likely popped half that stuff when you opened the pack job. Packers usually do ok.

BUT

learn to pack
learn to spot
learn all the basic piece parts of your gear and how and WHY they work
learn how to assemble your gear and to inspect it
all this in addition to air awareness, stability, how to fly at least as a beginner, etc.....

get it all done before you hit another 30 jumps (or at least have a plan to do it all in next 100 or so) - mmmkay? It's not that hard and every jumper should be able to do those and a lot more before calling himself a skydiver - being a 'casual tourist' in this sport isn't healthy for you or those around you

BTW - the tone of your note sounds like you are on the right track and want to learn all this stuff.....good for you

You pay for the pack job - not the opening.

I believe you have to pack your own canopy to get a license. I jumped my first pack job on a 4000' H&P (talk about having faith in you gear:o) and in doing so was able to sign off 2 things on my A proficiency card. B|

I dont prefer to pack. We have 2 very good packers at my dz, i wont let someone i dont know well pack for me. While i do know how to pack, i prefer jumping while im at the dz, plus packing is tiring. I would much rather set down the gear in the packing room and run outside and smoke a cig and chat with other jumpers. I have had a few weird openings, but in all honesty i cant wait for my first cutaway.

Now if i was able to get out there more often and jump more, i would probably pack for myself but when you can only squeeze in 3 or 4 jumps a week, id prefer to spend my time in the air, and hanging out. Not packing.

Was this back when you used to jump?
