Consider your renter's or homeowner's insurance if you have it. My renter's policy covers accidental damage to property, whether physically in my home or not, and it doesn't expire after two years. Might not need the extra warranty if you already have coverage.

My best piece of advice is to NOT get the Vaio to begin with... :|:P (I'm being serious.)

Same here.

My VAIO s360 has been nothing but a disappointment, and Sony has been a piece of shit to deal with.

Apparently my computer is prone to overheating, and after enough cycles the ram slot desolders from the motherboard. Sony fixed it the first time under warrenty. 6 months later, the same thing happened, and they refused to repair it.

I told them that it was obviously the same mode of failure (you can push on the ram slot, and the computer works, sort of), and they told me that it would be ~800$ to repair. What a bunch of assholes.

Get a dell or something else, Sony is a bunch of cockbags. ;)

rant over. :P

our pilot here got pretty bad service from Sony when his Vaio locked him out because of a BIOS failure. Even when he was willing to pay for the repair, it took months and headaches, always talking to a different person in India over an 800 number.

Once he sent it, no one could tell him the status. It finally came back, but the 'black hole' it went into while it was being repaired was pretty unacceptable and disturbing.

They really did not seem to have a good process to manage repairs and such.

I have a FS series that I bough about 3 years ago. Literally 2 weeks before my warranty was going to expire, my 15 inch widescreen LCD stopped working and just produced black.

I was lucky, but 2 of my friends with Dell laptops had their screens go on them too. It seems to be a typical problem with laptops...but remember, they are small and heat is generally an issue so they are often prone to issues.

Just a though, but you might want to purchase your laptop on your credit card because most people are unaware that most cards extend the warranty of most products FREE (just read your terms) for at least a year or two. You just repair it, send them your receipt of original purchase, and pay for the repair on your credit card and they will reimburse you. Pretty cool eh?

I could build you a computer for about $1,500 and it will blow away anything you can buy from Dell or Sony =)

I built my computer 3 years ago and it's still better than anything on the market today that you would spend $2,500 to get.

Not bragging, just saying that there are ways of buying computers that no one really thinks of. ;)

Consider three years to be a pretty good life expectancy from a laptop. Watch ebay and see what the one year old version of that model is selling for. If it's going for about $950 or more, skip the extended warranty and just plan to sell and replace it after 11-12 months. Repeat each year. That way, she'll always have a laptop that's no more than a year old and is under warranty, without any extra (or only very minimal) out of pocket expense.

Note that not all laptops maintain sufficient retail value after a year to make this technique work.
