mjkoziel 0 #1 December 20, 2002 Hey, I posted this in "Places to jump" but thought I 'd try here too. Has anyone been to the Varadero International Skydiving Center in Cuba, or heard anything about them... Their email is down right now. Thanks, Matt

freeflir29 0 #4 December 20, 2002 Quote Or an american tourist in Mexico Dude....pissing off the State Department is a REALLY bad idea.....
Opie 0 #5 December 20, 2002 yeah, yeah. that's why I haven't been scuba diving there.....yet. I don't want to be put on the I.R.S.'s hit list or talk to those friendlies at the state dept. I think this was overlooked alot before 9/11 but not anymore.
freeflir29 0 #6 December 20, 2002 Quote I think this was overlooked alot before 9/11 but not anymore Not even then. It's always been a pretty hot issue. Quote or talk to those friendlies at the state dept Funny, it seems when people think of spies and baddass people that kill folks they think of the CIA. There's a whole shit load of "spooks" that work for the State Department. I just haven't been successful in getting them to hire me yet....
narcimund 0 #7 December 20, 2002 Since 55,000 Americans visit Cuba each year (according to Lonely Planet), I hardly think it's the highest priority of the State Dept to track down and assassinate all of them. Not necessarily true in the future, of course. The US Gov't's assassination ambitions are growing. First Class Citizen Twice Over
happythoughts 0 #8 December 20, 2002 The last info on Americans visiting Cuba is this: If you are there and there is a problem, you have to handle it yourself. Americans can get permission to visit if you have relatives, but it takes nearly a year for the approval. Journalists can go for "professional" reasons. It's just kind of a "forbidden fruit" thing. I can't go, so I want to go. Forget it, go to Puerto Rico or the Bahamas.
narcimund 0 #9 December 20, 2002 "Forbidden fruit" is one possible motivation to visit Cuba. Another is curiosity. What is there in the world? It's the same motive for visiting Puerto Rico or Bahamas. Another is skepticism. When they say, "You can't even look at the thing we're condemning," it sure does make one curious what they're hiding. happythoughts 0 #10 December 20, 2002 I worked with a guy with a Canadian passport. He went down there for vacation. He said that the Canadian hotel chains are buying and building. Most of the older stuff is in disrepair. He said that soap, cosmetics, perfume, etc were hugely appreciated by the local honeys. Also, certain rental practices were winked at by the law and very inexpensive, hence his vacation selection.

mujie96 0 #12 December 20, 2002 We'd better not even mention what most of those poor local honeys are doing to get said perfume, and what sort of nasty, terminal, STD's they might be carrying. My ex husband #2 was stationed there for 3 years, I don't know anything about skydiving but the snorkeling and scuba is supposed to be just awesome. If I hadn't been so nice and given back all his pics I would scan and post but to give you an example, when we moved to Hawaii he complained that the water wasn't as pretty. freeflir29 0 #13 December 20, 2002 Quote My ex husband #2 was stationed there for 3 years Sweety...I don't think he was seeing any "local honeys." It's this matter of a big double fence and copious land mines that keeps them apart.
unlucky1 0 #14 December 20, 2002 I spent a few months in Cuba in the early 90's. You're right. Big fence separating Gitmo from the rest of Cuba. You look across 100 yards of nothing to your "mirror" (Cuban with an AK-47). There is no "honey" that your husband could've gotten with. With the exception of the Navy/Coast Guard women that are stationed there. THe water was EXCELLENT for scuba and snorkel. But the climate sucks. Its as barren as a desert, but extremely muggy and buggy. FRankly...the place sucked. "Life is not measured by the amount of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away." " People go to Las Vegas for the same reasons. Probably the same set of issues. Not making a moral judgement here. However, I pretty much look at life in the US with the same careful eye. Actually, the one I worry about the most is the one who drinks to near unconsciousness every weekend and doesn't remember what they did last weekend, much less be responsible about it. I've been diving in the Keys and the Bahamas and would say that the Bahamas water clarity wins hands down. I prefer the hotels in the Bahamas and the diving.
