What Happened to the "Community"?

Recommended Posts

I am just curious here. Over the past year this site has seemed to take on a different personality.

What was once a friendly welcoming place where people came together from all over to share some laughs and their passion for life seems to now be filled with hostile, condescending and argumentative people.

Sangiro created a great place for us to come together. When this place was really getting started and Rec was still around, the Rec trolls would refer to this as the place for Shiny Happy People. For some of us, that was breath of fresh air. A Place where people were actually friendly towards each other. People came from all over for gatherings like the 02 Holiday Boogie, The DZ.com tent at Rantoul was packed with people for a year or two, the first few Dublin Boogies where 100`s showed up. Every weekend it seemed we were traveling somewhere to meet up others that we first met on this site.

There was very much a since of community that seems to be fading here. It reads more like REC every day. I think it goes beyond the graphic posts that Sangiro has already addressed. the tone and atmosphere seem to have changed. There is a very different tone here. Some of the more prominent posters now seem to be quick to see how rude they can be without crossing the PA line. Their objectives seem to me to be to establish themselves by putting others down.

What happened?
Am I the only one that is seeing this?

Why is it happening?
Inevitable Growth and change?
Losing so many of our core personalities like Holly, GFD, Deuce, Skinny and others?
We all finally got to know each other and realized we didn’t like each other after all?
Just plain time for Change?
I am just getting old and everthing always seems like it used to be better?

I still love this site and the people I met through it and the great experiences I have had over the past 6 years thanks to this site. I just hate to see what was once a warm welcoming place changing into a REC like hostile environment. What are your thoughts?

What happened is that recdot took over.

:D

Theres a comedian (probably foxworthy)whose says

"When you go on a date with someone you dont meet that person, you meet their representative."

After a while people get to know each other and feel confortable being themselves. Thier miserable whiney non boobie posting selves.

I step back every so often because of he assholes that post here. I deal with politics and bullshit at work, I don't come here hoping to find more of the same.

With any luck I;ll be able to stay the fuck away from here since I am in a new town/city/state. there's alot to explore and a lot to do. I am homeless now but once I get settled in I am surely hoping that DZcom is not on my TO DO list.

J,
I think maybe what you are seeing (let's limit this to the Bonfire) is good-natured razz. Maybe you are talking about it being taken personally. Those that don't like the ribbing could easily opt out simply by saying, "Please don't do that to me anymore."

After a few hundred posts, I'm sure we would honor the request.
:D

My reality and yours are quite different.
I think we're all Bozos on this bus.

I agree. But it's only in the past year that you've noticed it; it's been going on much longer than that.

The shiny happy people have mostly found other things to do. He who hath the loudest keyboard wins.

All of the above, to many people Dizzy is not shiny and new anymore, the "core" founding people are very much in the minority now (even though i have been posting here for over 5 years I dont consider myself one of them, as i am sure "they" dont either).

Many communities both online in in nature lose that family vibe, when they get to a certain critical mass. dizzy is not immune to it.

I notice a few "hostile, condescending and argumentative" people on here, but to me they still seem to be outnumbered by the people who are here to share some laughs and be part of a community.

It's all a matter of perspective, J. Do I need to slap some perspective into you? :P (Oh wait, am I one of the hostile people you're talking about??? :))

While there is no doubt a constant cycle of change, I think a lot of it might have to do with the length of time one has been reading the forums. What was once all fresh, new and exciting becomes, for the most part, completely predictable. You get to a point where on any given thread you pretty much know who is going to chime in and what they are going to say. It's not just something that happens in the forums. It's a human nature thing. You get a new group together - everyone is happy and bonding and getting to know new people and then WHAM!, people actually get to know each other, clicks start, disagreements begin, etc. The more time you spend with a group the better you get to know (for better or worse) the other folks and with that history behind you your outlook often becomes a little more critical comparing the present to the past.

While someone who has been around the forums for a while sees the same people always reacting the same way and picking the same arguments, someone just being introduced probably sees a bunch of people that like to joke around and give each other a hard time. In time they will see the cycle and a whole new batch will arrive. As for specific individuals playing a large role in the atmosphere of the forum...I think that too is cyclical. The folks that you mentioned were fairly "high profile" posters (or whatever you want to call them) during your early stages in the forums and people that you became very close to. People starting to read and post after those folks have left us will have a whole different group of people that they look at the same way.

I do get a slightly different vibe from the forums now than I did when I posted regularly several years ago, but at the same time I have lost many of the personal connections I had with people on the site and now feel like more of a voyeur looking on than an active participant. I still check back once in a while though, to check up on friends and with interest in eventually getting back into the sport one day. I never know quite what to expect though each time I return.

edit: for grammar
Killing threads since 2004.

The same thing that happens in all things.

-Initially, nobody knows anyone and so there is a drive to meet others. A lot of contact on a superficial level.
A while back, everyone was new.

-After you meet enough of the others, then you realize that you can't hang out with all of them, so you tend to spend time with a few. More focused contact with a smaller number.

Example, when I go to the dz, I am busy because I talk to a lot of people. When that happens, new people get less attention. (The exception is when I am doing Muff things, like this weekend.)

A lot of skydivers come and go. Some people have faded from the sport.

The easy way to remedy this is to spend more time jumping and less time posting. Then the social aspect will grow because of the common experiences.

Yeah, I agree...and also one can't think of dz.com as a representation of the skydiving community. MOST of the jumpers I know who've been in the sport for a long time don't ever go to this site.

Many do, but it is mainly in the Non-Bonfire Forums.
Bonfire is... just that, the electronic representation of the dz social life.

People with an established social group tend to have a social crowd that they privately communicate with, using other methods like group emails.

Their forum participation is discussions of skydiving issues, gear, safety, or history... That sort of thing.

*raises hand*

I happen to be one of the people that Jay is talking about. I love the friends that I have met from here, yet I will be the first to admit that I like to fuck with the weak ones in the pack. I will say though that I'm about the same in person and will give you the same good natured ribbing when you see me around.

However, it reached a critical mass for me being a fuck-up about 2 months ago, when I got a 60 day vacation for being absolutely hateful to one of the moderators in a series of PMs.

I think I'll play nicer around here so I can keep an easy vein for meeting some decent new jumping friends. Hell, I'll even jump with the assholes...may as well be fair.

You? A "fast-faller"? Don't tell me...LOL

Come to Skyfest. I need some anvils to help out the youngsters on their All-Star Anvil SCR/SCS jump!
