What Happened to the "Community"?

Recommended Posts

The Cliqueyness definitely has a lot to do with it I think. The Familiarity/Predictability as kitty commented on is also a good point. None of this is new anymore but does that make it Bad?

Attention seekers have always been here and most likely always will be. "Look at ME" has always been a pretty common trait among Skydivers and people in general. Calling them out on it generally only gives them what thay want.

Those that want to come out make some jumps, Share some laughs and have a drink or two afterwards.. Come on. Those that do not, I hope they find something they enjoy as well.

I've been a moderator here for a long time; never smacked anyone, although I have warned people/banned them when they violate forum rules. While I was an S+TA I grounded a few people - who, not surprisingly, reacted pretty much the same as people do here when they are warned/banned.

The DZ is not "public property" any more than this forum is. The DZO can kick you off at any time, and an S+TA there can ground you. This does happen from time to time when people simply can't follow BSR's, or are consummate dicks to the DZO, students or other people there. Afterwards, of course, they claim "it's all politics because I don't kiss anyone's ass; I speak my mind and have honor!" or some other justification. But in most cases they're just being jerks.

Same basic principle here.

I am lost in a sea of desolate abandon.

I dont find the friendship here, as I used too.

I have found other ways to communicate with my friends and continue to develop those avenues.

Good luck to you bro!

Turtle you suck.

That is all. :o:ph34r::P

Part of the problem is that people think that people and places change while we don't. We at times tend to see that so many others are changing without lookign at ourselves. We all change. You, too.

When I joined this forum, I was an attorney with a window office in a Los Angeles high rise, skydiving or golfing on the weekends, bar hopping and playing gigs, living on the edge and having a blast.

I now live in Fresno with my law office on Shaw Avenue, married, two kids, haven't left a plane in almost 5 years, haven't gigged in almost 5 years. And I am so much happier now. My daughter was taken to the hospital this morning while I was in court for a guardianship proceeding, just trying to keep it together.

And since Shannon died, things have been different. It was my first, and I hope last, skydiver funeral.

Things change, and people change. The shame of this change is matched only by the beauty of the change.:)
Embrace the change, and new joys will be found. Even on here.

Clearly we have learned nothing from the movie "Mean Girls".

I learned Lindsey Lohan used to be hot before she overdid it on the drugs and alcohol. :)

The son is 3 1/2 now.
The girl is 16 months old. She got her first stitches a week ago. Last night ran a high fever and we suspected it got infected.

Doctors suspected sepsis and gave her IV antibiotics. Turned otu to be just bilateral ear infection and strep throat. But scared the hell out of us and I didn't sleep much.

Attached is a picture of her this morning.

CUTE!!! She doesn't even look scared at all. :)

That's how you can tell there's something wrong. When feeling better than miserable, she'd be royally pissed off at such an invasion of her person. The fact that she isn't is a real indication of something horribly amiss.

We all change. You, too.

Now wait just a minute. A few weeks ago you were insisting that we don't change!

WTF? Do we change or don't we? Ya can't have it both ways. :P

I changed. But then reverted. And re-reverted my changes and reversions.

I look at this forum as some weird long distance family network ,all sitting in a virtual house in cyberspace somewhere that i visit only when I feel like visiting- So I can be challenged by peoples minds and sense of humor that are unlike my own. But just like a weird family, somebody is going to say something stupid or spill something or step on the dogs tail or eat all the chips, fart,or hog the remote-people are going to get pissed off at each other for whatever reason due to personality and communication differences no matter how carefully posts are worded. I'm sure I bug the shit out of some of you sometimes and vice versa but really if you think about it thats a small part of the fun of the visits here.
Otherwise this place would be about as interesting as watching an episode of The Waltons-sober

The community got bigger and more anonymous; it's too big to be a community, so there are subcommunities.

However, we can all see those subcommunities. In Bonfire, you can't really tell much of the time (well, depending on who started the thread and/or how active it is). Some folks just don't go into SC.

NYC used to be a community, too. So all we have to do is piss off enough people that they all leave, then it'll be back to a little website. Of course, that would probably suck, because the people left behind would probably not be the ones who want community. Kinda like rec.skydiving.

So we just have to make it into what we want. And maybe identify our threads with tags like "incredibly intelligent pontification," "old school thread," "drunk postwhoring," and "good old-fashioned whine."
