What is wrong with people?

Recommended Posts

In the last 2 years I have had 7 canopies (3 mains 4 reserves) shipped to me with the connector links removed.

Is this some new thing designed to create more work?

Maybe I am old school but the links should stay on the canopy. It is so much easier to re-connect 4 links to the risers than it is to re-connect EVERY SINGLE LINE to a new set of links.

The people that do this are not only creating more work for themselves but a major PITA for the poor guy at the other end. LINKS ARE CHEAP!

When I ship a canopy I use those cards with the slots for the front/rear, right/left, and steering lines so the person at the other end has at least a starting point without having to unwind a wad of spaghetti. It is just common courtesy.

When I see shit like this I think to myself that the current generation of skydivers has no clue. Containers don't come with connector links, canopies come with connector links!

I am surprised they don't remove the slider and keep that too!

Sorry, I just had to vent.

You are correct in stating that the current generation of skydivers has no clues about gear.

It does not help that Performance Designs quit installing canopies on links when their Slinks became popular.
Now PD just uses cheesy plastic (price tag) ties to connect lines to cards.

Are they at least put on a zip tie or something? PD quit putting their canopies on links but at least they're put on a card with the plastic mini ties.

One reserve was sent to me loosely daisy chained starting about 2 1/2 up the lines with out links. The canopy was stuffed all crumpled up into a bag. That one sucked :D

The one sent in the best condition is my current reserve. It was sent on a card and was pulled out of the rig perfectly packed. It was a shame to actually redo the pack job.

At least tell the people who sent it to you that way not to do that next time.

I prefer it when the user sends the D-bag, pilot chute and risers with the canopy;)

I was packing near a young lady yesterday, who had her closing loop come out (No idea why). She was in a huge hurry to make a load, and had no idea how to put the loop in. It was a brand new Wings container, which has a funny loop holder that I had never seen before, but I figured it out and told her to settle down, because she was so freaked out, I was a little worried about her making a jump. Then she finished packing, talking to herself and going so fast, she kept screwing up. Then when she was ready to stow the pilotchute, she checked the collapsing line in the window, saying "No green, it's supposed to be green". I looked at the PC, and it was cocked just fine and ready to go. But she couldn't get over not seeing the green mark on the line. I told her that sometimes the line flips over, or pulls a little too far, etc, but her PC was OK.

I guess she survived the jump, because I didn't hear any sirens later that day, but she sure didn't know dick about that gear. And the bad thing was that she didn't really care at all about learning about it.

Just like the folks who dive out the door in response to the green light, without having the faintest idea if the airplane is even in the right time zone.

One good vent deserves another, I guess.

It's not just the current generation. I know of a jumper who's been in the sport for a long time; he recently sold a reserve and sent the freebag and pilot chute with it. :S

I do, not much good it does. It will be a different idiot next time.

The responses I have had are " I thought the links stay on the risers"

Geez, even a pull-up cord through the 4 line groups would be OK. The last one had the 4 line groups tied in a knot. I guess that is better than nothing.

I had a Smart reserve sent that was just wadded up in the canopy. EVERY SINGLE LINE WAS TWISTED. Not only do you have to hook it back up to the links you have to untwist EVERY SINGLE LINE! a five minute job takes two fucking hours!

Even with soft links the "loop" can be left on the finger traps, it does not have to be doubled.

It is just fucking rude!

I had a demo main canopy sent to me from the mfg in the same condition. No links, no risers, canopy stuffed into a nylon sack. It looked as if they never even took it out of the sack from the last guy who demoed it.

I did not buy a canopy from them.

Yup in a newbie compared to the rest posting, but I have an interest in gear and working my way through learning to pack different things, pack tandems and exp kit most weekends. But i'm still supprised the amount of experiance jumpers who either can pack or are very poor with little knowledge of there kit.

The seeing green thing as well, mine slips all the time but pilot chute is def cocked good bit of excess left. not so much at my dz but when i go visit other ppl are alway hung up when theydont see it!! to a detramental extent!

Thats why we have paid packers now, who think their Jr. riggers too.
Too many people throw their money around in order to get what they want done with out having to learn anything, why worry about it when all you have to do is slap a 10 down and get it done for you.
I'm always surprised at how many people don't even know how to hook up a 3-ring the right way, maybe their full of shit or just to lazy to do the work, I don't know, but from now on I'm charging 25 bucks a riser to assemble 3-rings.:S

You got that right bro, I charge the same to pack a main as I do a reserve.

If you pay 5 bucks for a pack job you will get a $5 pack job.

Cock the pilot chute? $5
Uncock the slider? $5
Do a line check? $5
check the RSL? $5
Check the 3 rings$5
check the closing loop? $5
Check the reserve pin? $5
Inspect the harness? $5

total=$45

Yep, I just removed my main for a buyer this weekend, and I cut a little piece of cardboard off a old box, poked six holes in it, labeled the holes, ran the soft links through four of the holes, and tied the steering lines to the other two. It took me maybe five minutes. I figured it's just common courtesy, plus I'd hate to have the buyer chop their first jump after hooking it up wrong and try to blame the canopy...

What's with everyone bogarting the links? They're standard with all the canopies I've seen... [:/]

Your profile says you hold a rigger certificate. Because of that little piece of paper you are held to the same standards packing a main that you are packing a reserve. I charge the same for a main as a reserve and believe it or not, I have had people say to go ahead and pack them both. More money than brains or just plain lazy.[:/]

I guess I need to up the price of a main pack job.
The reserve rates seem to have gone up with some I know this season to 60.00, so I guess I'll up mine too, wouldn't want them to think I was lowballing.

I've always charged the same for an I&R on a reserve or a main. What amazes me is, the number of folks who, when they are handed their bill, ask me; "Why so much for the main?" I politely tell them that I go through the exact same procedure with a main as I do a reserve. It's surprising, how many come back with; "...but, it's just a main?":S[:/]

So you explain your ethos to them after you're already holding a bill over their head? I'm happy to have a full inspection on my main but only if I ask for it.

And it is amazing how many get the hint and leave their main at home.;) Sparky

You guys want people to leave their main at home? Over here, riggers will check the main too, as a courtesy, and you NEED to have the risers, pilotchute and bag with the rig otherwise it won't get it's yearly check signed off. Usually you get the main fieldpacked into the main tray, or they'll charge you a lot if you want it packed.

Then again, we aren't really allowed to unhook stuff ourselves, here. I once got a talking to because I was hooking up a main. Now, I just do it anyway, and usually I know what I'm doing, although I did end up with a twisted riser once :$ But that was totally my fault, and I still happily hook up canopies, put canopies on risers, change sliders, bumpers, links, pilotchutes, bags, whatever. Comes from doing CRW, mainly. I just try to avoid hooking up stuff on a 10 min call now :D

Pity I really don't like packing, and can't sew..... Cause only riggers are allowed to do stuff like that, here [:/]

That's not quite how it goes. When I'm handed a 'complete' rig and told; "I need a re-pack." I ASK first if, they want the main I&R'd also. I don't just "hold a bill over their head". I know, us riggers aren't 'up there' on the pay scale but, I don't do 'un-authorised' work, either.
By the way, that's a pretty strong accusation you made!
