I Got a copy put in my locker at work (I am a Air Traffic Controller). I went down to my Training specialist to find out where he got it and told me that the FAA sent him Two of them and Figured since I Jump i would want one. I don't know why we got one at our TRACON but we did. He is going to find out if we are required to have one in the faciality if not he will give me the other one too. For those who want a copy call your local FAA facility and ask if they have any extra copies they will probably give it to you.

I did not know Sandy wrote it that would explain all the Talon's and Voodoo's in the pictures.

If you have access to a copy machine I know how you can pick up some extra jump money. :)

I was trying to be funny. Hmmmmm... maybe, that is the intent of the FAA. To get a copy to riggers. I'll have to take your suggestion and give my FSDO a call.
I had no idea, Sandy wrote that manual, either. Seems logical, he'd use his products.

Well, at least the FAA website admits is exits.

from a search for the document number on faa.gov

"] PARACHUTE RIGGER PRACTICAL TEST STANDARDS with Change 3
... Reference section. Reason for change: adding new reference: FAA-H-8083-17, Parachute
Rigger Handbook (Federal Aviation Administration). ? Use of the Practical ...
www.faa.gov/education_research/testing/airmen/test_standards/media/FAA-S-8081-25.pdf - 2006-03-03 - Text Version"

But, try to click the hot link or drill down to it from the home page and it locks up. Note the change date to the test standards is march 3 2006.

Still can't find it to down load.>:(

My first reply from FAA (Airmen Certification) pointed me to the Handbook download page, which did not have a link or listing for "Parachute Rigger Handbook."

My second reply told me they don't have such a thing and I should call the Government Printing Office (GPO), and the number the FAA gave me is out of service.

I had no luck searching the GPO website either. I will call them first thing in the morning when the wait time is not so long.

Is that to say, if us riggers wait long enough, the FAA will bring a copy to us?

:S
I wouldn't hold my breath for the FAA to do something so useful.
:P

Anyway... I Googled "FAA-H-8083-17" and it does appear as a reference in "FAA-S-8081-25, Change 3, Parachute Rigger Practical Test Standards"... which I think someone up-post has already said... so, anyway, it looks like it exists... just there's not a soft copy to be had anywhere's that anyone's been able to come up with yet. I messed around on www.faa.gov for a bit trying to find it, like I think someone else up-post has also said, but no dice.

Here's a thought... someone said Sandy Reid wrote it... I think I'll fire an email off to R.I. and see if he can add any intel. Worst that can happen is he won't reply... :(

I would well imagine, Sandy would know. I would guess too, he's been inundated with e-mails since this thread was posted. Let us know, what you find out. I hope, the cost is 'with-in reason'!

Good luck!
Chuck

True... I hope I didn't add to a pile of SPAM-Mail that Sandy has to sort through... but then again... how many times have you seen folks here at DZ.Com be told to "call the manufacturer" or "read the manual" only to have the thread drone on and on and on; funny how lots of problems can be solved by doing that and funny how there's is seemingly lots of resistance here to do that... anyway, once I saw it said Sandy had a hand in writting this sought after Pub... I figured going and asking the man would be a logical thing to do...
:$
:P
:)
... silly me.

I would well imagine, Sandy would know.

I talked to Brenda yesterday on the phone about it . . . she confirmed that I had the publication number correct, and the broken link I had was all they have as well. She said that the FAA has hung the file on their website, but they don't know where it went.

I emailed GPO this afternoon . . .

I got a reply from Sandy today. He said that USPR website would have an update on the pub in the next few weeks. he also said that the FAA and GPO were to have it available for download but of course as has been stated there is a problem with that. So it's pretty much a waiting game.

It was suggested earlier in the thread to call local FSDO and see if they had a copy to give away. Since it was in limited print, I would give my FSDO a call, but I have a feeling they would know what I was talking about.

*shutters*

Why do I always get the feeling like I'd rather go to the dentist then talk to the local FSDO.

FYI,

I just received an email from:

ramona.fillmore@faa.gov

and she says that it can be bought at:

http://bookstore.gpo.gov/

She also says that it will be available on their website for download in the next couple of weeks at:

www.faa.gov

Hope that this is of some help to all of you.

Go to faa.gov. Search Parachute Rigger Handbook. It's number 1.

www.faa.gov/library/manuals/aircraft/media/faa-h-8083-17.pdf

It's 344 pages in color. Took about 2 minutes to down load on a T1 line. When I tried to save it to a thumb drive it wouldn't let me. Work around; File, Send Mail. Then click on the attached pdf file in your mail message and save that.

Hmmm, I think I'll print it later here at work.;)

Can't help but wonder how many others had "watch thread" activated here, following you guys in your chase for the elusive pdf file.

(and the faa.gov webmaster wondering where suddenly all this traffic is comming from with people from all over the world downloading some obscure 45mb file about "parachutes?" that in previous times was sought by nobody...)
