Apparently he put it down on the next try; I question his judgement in trying again on that runway. I know he would be in a hurry to not be airborne any more after the wing damage but still, there must have been a runway with a better heading somewhere close by.

I heard on CNN, I think, that it could be blamed on ATC. They gave him the runway, and that heading had SEVERE crosswinds. The second attempt was on a perpendicular runway, into the wind as it should have been the first time.

That's all fine and good however if I were the pilot and there were another runway to choose from it never would have gone that far. Hero is not the first word that come to my mind to describe the pilot.

I wonder what the weather was saying when he entered the airspace. As far as I understand it if ATC give you permission to carry out an unsafe action it is still your responsibility to say "Uh,..no I don't think so."

I just read it up in the local newspapers website. Looks like it wasn't the pilot, but the 24 year old female copilot who tried and botched the attempt. Damaging the plane in the process. The flightcaptain then took over and set down the plane on the second attempt. They are currently investigating why the far more experienced pilot allowed the copilot in the first place to make the landing attempt instead of doing it himself in such a bad weather.

If there was another runway to choose from they should both be removed from the cockpit
