DavidB 0 #26 February 14, 2008 Two things my pop told me as I boarded the bus for Cape May way back in August 1973: "Keep your nose clean & don't volunteer for anything!" 8 weeks? Basic is only 8 WEEKS!?!? Damn man, when I went through it was 14 weeks!!!!! Makes me wonder, first, how much was cut out, & second what kind of recruits are graduating now. Oh, & don't volunteer for Color Guard. You'll have to do everything everyone else does, plus C/Guard duty! Of course, if you're looking for brownie points, disregard the last! Finally, enjoy the mess hall there. It was just getting constructed when I left basic (10/73), we were still using the mess hall left over from WW2. If you want to get away during your weekend off, & want to spend some time with an old Coastie & former skydiver (who smokes & is basically a bad influence), give me a shout! I'm only a couple hours north. When the only tool you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail.
MrFreefall383 0 #27 February 14, 2008 Yeah, it's only 8 weeks. It's clearly a softer military than it once was, and there are far more idiots now than there ever were. Which means if you're suspicious that only the morons graduate boot and enter the fleet, you're probably right. I might be a good example too. It takes a complete lunatic and moron to want to go AST. Volunteering is for kiss asses. I'm no kiss ass. Heard the food is pretty damn good at Cape May, but I guess I'll find out for sure in a few weeks. I'll get back in touch once I'm out of Cape May, because I'm doing hometown recruiting for almost a month after I get out with R/O Bronx."If at first you don't succeed... well, so much for skydiving." - aviation cliche
