aufreefly 0 #227 April 9, 2003 I am curious...is overclocking my cpu relatively safe? Will the stock fan/heatsink be sufficient? What would be a good resource to begin overclocking?
Cajones 0 #228 April 9, 2003 Tread very lightly in these parts... Overclocking is sort of like BASE jumping (although not nearly as dangerous or fun). Find a good mentor. Use overclocking gear for overclocking. Be ready to spend money up front for good stuff. There're many good resources for overclocking. This IS the internet. Haven to many a computer geek. Do a search, and start at places like overclockerscafe. To answer your other two questions: Relatively safe? Depends. Stock fan/heatsink? Not if you're gonna' get serious. The laws of physics are strictly enforced.
jfields 0 #229 April 9, 2003 Before you consider overclocking, think hard about why you are doing it. It is risky to your computer. You can fry components and boards pretty easily. I'm not saying don't do it, but, like jumping, be informed. I've chosen not to overclock any of my home systems, and wouldn't think of it at work. The reason is pretty simple. Fundamentally, the further you push the limits of your hardware, the higher the chance of failure. Higher temps, higher voltages and such are inherently counter to my personal goals which are stability and reliability. Some overclockers basically crank the speed up until the system gets dramatically unstable or locks up, then go back one notch. To me, there are few reasons to overclock. If I want more performance, I'll buy more RAM and a faster processor. If I want more than that, I'll go dual processor. More still? Switch to an all SCSI system and contemplate servers with quad processors. From an admin point of view, the money is well worth the reliability. Mind you, I have the budget to do what I need and I'm not a gamer. Your choices may differ.

Overclocking is a breeze - with the right equipment and knowledge. The best place to learn more is Hexus Forums - read them for a while until you start to understand what is going on - feel free to email me r.moulton@btinternet.com/PM me if you want explanations or pointers. But after reading Hexus for a while you may (should?) decide overclocking is far too sad .Rich M

RevJim 0 #232 April 10, 2003 Quote I didn't say Folding@Home didn't work on Win98. FireDaemon doesn't seem to work in Win98. We were discussing it in the context of hiding the existence of Folding from users. Wow, I shoulda done that before! I'd have at least a couple of more WU's in! I downloaded the console version into my Folding directory, disable the auto loading on the graphical interface, and ran the console. it detected the previous work and started where it had left off. I then shut it down, installed FireDaemon, set up the console as a service, and let it fly. Now I actually have to check the task manager to see if it's there. It's running all the time, no matter which user is logged in, and it's totally (almost) hidden. Waaaay freaking cool! It's your life, live it! Delete the FireDaemon icon from the desktop, remove the FireDaemon entry from the Start Menu, bury the Folding directory somewhere covert like in \WINNT\Resources and few people would ever notice. Next thing you know, you have a covert folding farm. Of course, that can get you in trouble if someone does find out. I don't have to go to those extremes, but I know how they work. Cajones 0 #250 April 14, 2003 Wow, I'm feeling kind of special. A shout out from Wendy (just returning the repaying the great karma you set to me!). An article on the home page of dz.com (mostly a cut-and-paste of my first post on this thread). A PM from someone with some very kind words for being groovy. And now some hipsters referencing me as a "celebrity" on this thread. I was having a challenging day, with Cingular Wireless tugging my chain, and the people at Best Buy almost sending me into a rage (they redeemed themselves in most excellent fashion - Best Buy kicks ass, but not as much as you guys!) Who knows - maybe my sweetheart will come home and give me some extra-special lovin (or maybe some prison style huck-a-buck)... Livin' right - it pays in the end - but it's also nice when it pays a little in the middle, too! The laws of physics are strictly enforced.
