skybytch 273 #1 January 30, 2008 Hopefully this can stay out of SC... For my Modern Asian Civ class I have to keep an eye on a few newspapers from Asian countries (there's a list of newspapers from a lot of countries/regions at RefDesk.com). Very interesting to read not only what is going on in other parts of the world (did you know that China is now dealing with major snow related issues?), but also to read what and how people in other countries think - about themselves, about their country and about events in their countries, regions and around the world. Does anybody else read a newspaper from a country other than the one you live in on a regular basis? Which one(s)? Why?

nerdgirl 0 #4 January 30, 2008 Quote Does anybody else read a newspaper from a country other than the one you live in on a regular basis? Which one(s)? Why? Yes. I have a print subscription to the Weekend Edition of UK's Financial Times (FT). Why? Because I can't get a subscription to UK's Guardian where I am now in US. Like to check on-line (altho’ I wouldn’t call it regular reading): -- UK's Guardian -- Norway’s Aftenposten, altho’ if I’m feeling linguistically brave, I try to read the Norwegian version & -- Iran’s Tehran Times VR/Marg Act as if everything you do matters, while laughing at yourself for thinking anything you do matters. ltdiver 3 #5 January 30, 2008 What's even more fascinating is that if you put the exact same story, written by other countries on the same issue, side-by-side, you'll get just as many different (and often opposing) viewpoints. Even on such agreeable subjects as, say, the Olympics. ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon
faulknerwn 38 #6 January 30, 2008 I subscribe to the BBC daily news email (like CNN's.) I also subscribe to The Week - a FANTASTIC magazine that pulls in news articles from around the world about current events and its really interesting to read. Andrewwhyte 1 #9 January 31, 2008 I read the NY Times on occasion, when I lived in Mexico I read the Miami Herald. During the nineties the South China Morning Post (Hong Kong) and the Straits Times (Singapore) were fairly prominent around Vancouver; both were excellent papers at that time. Hausse 0 #10 January 31, 2008 I read daily the NZZ (Switzerland) and Cash (also Switzerland) online. I think the newspaper my host family gets is crap (and most of the other american ones I've read so far) out several reasons: It is very hard to find a neutral unbiased article. Most of the time you can say if a republican, democrat and so on who wrote it. It is very hard to find real international news (and what George W. does in Mexico doesn't qualify as international news). The domestic news are also crap since they usually just talk about things like lead paint or Anna Nicole Smith.

I find international news is much more biased in US papers toward what directly affects US interests than in most countries. Not saying the bias doesn't exist in other countries' media, but it seems much more obvious in US media.
Andy9o8 2 #12 January 31, 2008 Yes, all online: BBC news as a supplement to CNN.com daily; the Guardian and The Australian a couple times a week; the Toronto Star occasionally. Oh, and sometimes the Dallas Morning News. The comparative differences in perspective and emphasis are interesting.
