turtlespeed 219 #26 January 23, 2008 QuoteI think that today I have completely lost any remaining faith I had in humanity. My downstairs neighbors have apparently moved and left their cat behind. The poor little thing was out in the rain all night and this morning was sitting under my window, just crying. He was wet, cold and hungry. I fed him, and am calling rescues to try to find someone that can take him in. He's light grey with white paws and chest, and once clean and dry, he'll be gorgeous! He's very sweet and came right up to me when I approached with cat food. I don't remember the last time I was this angry. I just don't understand how someone can do this to an animal in their care. Is it worse that people do that to people or to animals?I'm not usually into the whole 3-way thing, but you got me a little excited with that. - Skymama BTR #1 / OTB^5 Official #2 / Hellfish #408 / VSCR #108/Tortuga/Orfun
Jewels 0 #27 January 23, 2008 I don't know your neighbors and I agree that the situation sounds bad, but do you know how to contact them? A co-worker of mine just moved and all of the activity (packing, coming and going, etc.) scared the cat. He ran off and they tried to catch him, but it took a neighbor's help and a couple of days to recover him. They would never mistreat their pets, but I can see how someone could misconstrue what happened if the cat just happened to turn up on their doorstep some time after the move. I just thought maybe you could contact them and let them know you have the cat if they were looking for him, or that you had already made other arrangements if they couldn't accommodate him in their new place. (That's the nice way of saying, "I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt, but if you had the gall to abandon him, *I* will clean up your mess.")TPM Sister #

Jewels 0 #29 January 23, 2008 What's illogical about it? If the cat got scared and ran, it gets him reunited with his family. If they don't want him, he still gets a second chance. Edited to add: Cats tend to be outside more than dogs as a matter of course--at least, they are in my neighborhood. If the cat wandered off and didn't come when called, it could have been that they couldn't find him at the right time. It doesn't mean they would necessarily stop the move. My co-worker finished the move and then went back for their cat.TPM Sister #
Nightingale 0 #30 January 23, 2008 I'm going to stick a sign up in the laundry room explaining what happened and to contact the rescue if they want him back. I don't know who they are or how to contact them. The rescue is going to take him to the vet where he'll be scanned for a microchip.

Jewels 0 #32 January 23, 2008 Excellent! I agree--it doesn't sound good, but a lot of things go on during a move. I'd like to at least HOPE that it wasn't a callous act. There are a lot of people who are the ultimate jerks and should be reported--but I would love it if this was something different! waltappel 1 #37 January 23, 2008 QuoteIs it worse that people do that to people or to animals? Here's the order of priority from worst to least bad: 1. Animals, domestic or not, but especially domestic. 2. Old people. Maybe it's because I'm closer to being really old than really young, but even if they're mean and not all there I feel for 'em. 3. Kids. There's always someone willing to take care of the kids, but not always someone there for the animals or the elderly. 4. non-Old adults with problems not of their own making. Most have friends or family. Some do not. 5. Dumbasses who got themselves in a bad spot by being stupid. Walt

livendive 8 #46 January 23, 2008 Quote Someone told me once you can tell the mental health of someone by how they treat their animals...the more I see, the more credence I give that remark. Along those lines, one of the great things about meeting people while I have my dog with me is I get to hear their puppy-dog voice. The lack or creepiness of a person's puppy-dog voice is a great indicator on whether I want to spend one more second in their vicinity. As for the owners of the cat in the original post...fuck them.
