If you could steal $8000 without anyone knowing would you?

Recommended Posts

Not to sound pessimistic, but anymore I would.

After seeing all the owners' kids coming into the company with newly formed positions handed to them with starting salaries that I could never attain, and all the vandalism that happens, yes I'd take it.

I'm still an honest guy, but nobody's paying me to be one.

Are there any penalties for this act?

none. It's a question of right and wrong.

Is it yours?:D

Once upon a time, I would've said yes. And being quite honest, there was a time I've shoplifted too. But I have a different set of morals now. :$

About a year ago, I bought a $50 card table/chairs from Walmart. I got into the parking lot and realized that the cashier never charged me for them. Since I was already in the parking lot, they would never have known the difference. But I would have. So, I peeled the UPC coded sticker off of the box and I went back into the store to the Customer Service desk and explained what happened. And paid for it. The lady seemed quite shocked. I'm sure she doesn't have that happen very often. ;)

No - I'm the person that drives 15 miles back to a gas station after realizing they gave back too much change...

Fifteen years ago, I walked out of Macy's with eight items and a charge receipt that reflected the purchase of four items. I didn't notice it until I got home, but as soon as I did, I called customer service and read the rep the SKUs so she could adjust my bill. Doing so "cost" me nearly $500 dollars, but I'd never have had a moment's satisfaction wearing those oufits if I'd done differently.

These days, it's small stuff--too much change at the register, an extra $10 from the ATM (well, I tried to give that back, but the bank wouldn't take it).

All in all, it really doesn't matter to me what the person on the other end of the transaction thinks (or those who might be watching), but it makes a whole lot of difference about how I feel about me.

Still, I'm not sure there's any way to pose a question like yours and get a graven-in-stone answer, because depending on the circumstances, the answer may change, even for someone with very stringent standards for ethics and honesty.

Like...what if I had no money at all? And a hungry child? Or bill collectors pounding at the door? Or I needed medical attention? Or--double-whammy time--I had a sick, hungry child?

There are a world of possibilities in this question, and while one can estimate one's choices based on past performance, there is always the possibility that there will be some unforeseen circumstance to alter everything.

What if you just had to pay an extravagant bumpersticker bill - because some idiot stole them from you and started plastering them - not by any direction of yours - all over the city and surrounding areas.:ph34r:

Hi RL - glad you see you posting again!

That was sort of the point of my post - *I* would know that I'd done it...and I wouldn't like being that person.

With that said, I *could* see keeping the money in some sort of dire need scenario like you envisioned (hungry/sick child), but otherwise, no.

Depends who's money it was.

Yep. If it was some dumb ass drug dealer who left a wad of cash on top of his car and drove off, leaving it on the street, hell yeah I'll take it, after making sure he's really gone. :P

I would too - but I wouldn't keep it . .

It would end up at an orphanage or a battered woman's shelter.

you could donate it to single working mothers

True that - it would be helping the community . . .
I'm just sayin'.

That sounds more like the turtlespeed we know. :D:D:D

But yeah, I would have put the money to good use... drug education programs, etc... minus a finders fee of course...

Have to say that I agree.

Like Billy said...is it money from a drug dealer?

If it was some kind of overpayment from either or both of 2 entities that I won't name to keep this out of SC, I'd use that money on treatments that are not covered by insurance for my sons. I hold those 2 entities partially responsible for my sons' disabilities, and $8000 is not even a laughable joke compared to the money we spend combating those deficiencies.

Meh, come to think of it, I actually probably wouldn't. I would obsess about looking over my shoulder with 'what ifs'. [:/] I can find other ways to make $8000 if it came to dire circumstances.
