"I Am Legend"

Recommended Posts

I like how alot of the scenes were filmed on location. The flashbacks were pretty good. It was better than I expected...although I came in with no expectations. :S

I liked it..but I'm not sure I'd want to see it again. The part with his dog and talking to the mannequin kinda got to me[:/].

It was so-so, wish I'd seen Golden Compass instead.

Golden compass was disappointing for me. It seemed like a few producers got together. One said "hey, I know some people that are doing some amazing CG stuff that's never been seen before, but they haven't been able to figure out how to work it into a movie." Second one said "I have some favors I'll call in to get some really good actors on this." Third one said "that doesn't leave us any money to script the book, but that's OK because no one cares about story if you've got awesome CG and really good actors."
Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

It wasn't bad, it wasn't amazing. Special FX were terrible but there isn't that much in the movie. Not much of a story or overall plot that extends outside of what the fist few minutes puts out there. They did almost nothing with the Vampires which was disappointing.

The only thing that carries this movie is Will Smith's acting ability.

My girlfriend and I saw it this past weekend. She went into it with decapitated expectations, and I went in with reasonably full knowledge of Matheson's original story. What was done to this story is unfortunately becoming the standard for big studio films these days: they took an incredibly fascinating story about human nature and what happens to coping mechanisms when there is absolutely nobody to bounce ideas off of and dumbed it all down for mass consumption.

In the book, Robert Neville is not "a brilliant scientist", he's not an officer in the Army and he's not making efforts to contact potential survivors. He's an average joe who's left alone and forced to endure rather severe hardships. But rather than strive from early on to figure out what makes him different and use that to effect change, he takes a more violent and easy route to keep himself going. That's what makes his eventual end so poignant and telling: he's lost his objectivity and replaced it with grim routine. The movie took that concept and wrung the life out of it. I was underwhelmed.

I really enjoyed it.

I didn't know the back-story, I didn't think it was going to have a real intense plot.

The shadow-seekers were a bit, meh, to me. But other than that, I really enjoyed the flick. The golf balls on the back of the Blackbird was hilarious. And the bacon. That is all I'll say.

-shrug- Not mad I payed for it, but probably won't buy it when it comes out.

I might though.

WARNING: SPOILERS!

A exact remake of "Omega Man" with Charlton Heston, with modern special effects for the vampire people.

Probably not an exact remake, considering I Am Legend was an old sci-fi novel from the 50s...

Well then, maybe "Omega Man" was made from that book too, because the stories were identical in almost all respects, down to the finest details.

------------------
All 3 pictures based on original novel, which is superior to them all, IMHO, but check out the bonus section of the "Omega" DVD for some interesting stuff about how the plot was updated to reflect early 70's social issues.
---------------

Both "Omega Man" and "I am Legend" had the following:

- Fortress homes filled with security features.
- Vampire people that can only come out at night.
---------------------
Meh. In the original novel, they were vampires. In "Omega Man", the bad guys were victims of biological warfare.
--------------

- Daily patrols of New York City.

----------------
Both Matheson's original novel and "Omega" were set in Los Angeles.

- Daily radio broadcasts to try and find survivors
-------------------
Neither the novel nor "Omega" featured this, though I seem to recall seeing something in "Last Man On Earth", though I've only seen it once (that was all I could stand).
---------------
- Hero is a doctor working on a cure for the virus.
-----------------

In the novel, Robert Neville is just an ordinary bloke who teaches himself biology, chemistry, etc. in an effort to determine the cause. No effort made for cure. In "Omega", Colonel Robert Neville (Heston) is a biological warfare researcher, who just happens to have the only good version of the vaccine when his helo pilot succumbs to the bug and crashes. Neville injects himself with the vaccine as a last-ditch effort to keep from dying himself. It works.
--------------

- Capturing a vampire for cure experiments.

-------------
True. In the novel, Neville drags a sleeping vampire outside to observe the effects of sunlight on the victim as well as performing other tests and experiments; scene in "Omega" where Neville is talking to the infected survivors: "I captured one of Matthias' people last year. Tried everything in the shelves on him.". Cut scene to Neville struggling with and finally killing a "family" member.
-------------------------
- Blood serum cure to be passed on to the survivor colony.
-----------------------
Not so in the novel. The survivors developed natural immunity but were still infected with the vampire disease. In this case, Neville was the last of the normal, uninfected humans. The "messiah" scene in "Omega" remains controversial to this day.
-------------------------
- Talking to mannequins for companionship.
-------------------------
In "Omega" Neville has a bust of Caesar that he plays chess with and talks to. In "Last Man", protagonist Vincent Price narrates the film. In the novel, Neville thinks to himself a lot, and almost never speaks out loud: "Why do you always have to drink so much? He thought to himself. "Why don't you shut the hell up? He thought to himself..."

-------------------------
- Vampire ambush.
-------------------------
Ditto. Exciting scene in "Omega", where Neville barely makes it back in time.
---------------------------
- Lone female survivor hooks up with the hero.
---------------------------
True in novel, not so in "Omega". In that picture, Neville is rescued by a group of infected but otherwise-normal survivors, among whom is Lisa, played by Rosalind Cash (who also appeared 14 years later in "Buckaroo Banzai").
---------------------------
Okay, this movie had a dog companion for the hero. That's the only difference I saw. Yeah, that really made it an original movie.
------------------
There was a dog in the novel, and it was the most heartbreaking part of the book. The new film obviously made an important concession to convey dialogue and advance the story. In the novel, almost everything occurs in Neville's head. Tough to take that story from the page to the screen without giving the main character something to play off. Hence the dog.
--------------------
Oh and the original had a white man with a black woman, and this one has a black man with a white woman.
--------------------
Doesn't get more 21st Century PC than that.
--------------------
They should have just called it "Omega Man II".
-------------------
Nah. It's just another Hollyweird retread. You know the drill: dust off an old script and cast blacks in the roles. Something old, something new.

What kind of car did Heston drive in the original?

Two varieties of Mustang convertibles (tip of the hat in the new pic, obviously), and a Willys Jeep.

In the original 1954 book, it was a Willys station wagon, rather than a red Mustang.

True. Neville was an ordinary bloke, and the Willy was his family car.

You can probably tell that I'm a big fan of the novel and "Omega". :SB|:D

My guess is that at least 75% of all the shots had at least 1 special effect in it; maybe higher.

The ones that "worked" you didn't notice. The ones that didn't work are the only ones you did.

Just saw it and simply put, it sucked. Save your money and go see it when it's at the dollar movie. Hollywood is doing a good job of making very disappointing movies as of late and it just keeps getting worse, even ones that are remakes of old movies.

You know, more than a few movies have used real actors as vampires and have met with a fair amount of success. All frustrations with the deviations from the original Matheson story aside, I couldn't force myself to care about Neville's interaction with a bunch of pixels.

I gave this movie an unmotivated "meh".

I thought it was pretty good but of course I haven't seen the previous versions of the film... (or read the book)

Ultimately, I don't generally like to compare classic movies to modern rewrites but that's just my opinion.

Of course I'm shallow like that... ;)

Somebody likes the darned thing:

All that means is a bunch of people were duped by the preview hype and are now $8.50 poorer. I bet if you did exit polls you would find most didn't like it..even those who are ignorant of the book and previous movie. When it was over in the theatre I was in I heard a lot of "That's it?" and "You have got to be kidding me", and plenty of "That sucked". I find it hard to believe I was in the only theatre in the whole US where the majority there felt the same way.

Watch for it to nose-dive once the buzz gets around.

Surprising how high the Tomato-Meter is for it.

I just saw it yesterday and I'm going to go with the "just OK" opinion. I do think Will Smith did an good job, though.

One plot thing that kind of bothered me- he makes a point of saying the "dark seekers" or whatever they are have no humanity left, no survival instincts, etc. They're essentially just mutant animals which I guess is supposed to make it OK to trap and experiment on them, BUT he's apparently been been doing that along. Plus, they are able to able to set a trap for him and launch an attack on his home. Doesn't that make them sentient beings, not just mutant animals? And when they go after him, aren't they simply attacking the person who has been attacking and killing them? And finally, if they are simply evolved/ mutated humans, do they really need a "cure"? I know, its just a movie...... :P
