DavidB 0 #26 January 4, 2008 After a particularly heavy Nor'easter one year (around 1993 I think) that left us so much snow that it COMPLETELY buried a 1970 Chrysler 300 beside our old house, I vowed to get a snow blower. Early the next season I picked up a MTD 24" with 5HP Techumsa power. It's no sewing machine (Honda). It would throw snow across the road onto the neighbor's property! Worked GREAT in the suburbs! I could clean our whole property & do the neighbor's corner sidewalk in about 45 minutes. After we moved out into the "sticks" I needed something a little bigger. Couldn't justify the cost of one to go on the back of my tractor (JD4400), & the MTD took too long to clear the 75' long, 50' wide drive, so I got a blower attachment for the DR mower. The MTD is now relegated to doing the ramps & decks & the DR does the rest. BTW, the DR blower is a single stage. Didn't have any trouble with it going through 14" of snow a couple years ago. Didn't need it last year & hope I don't need it this year too (knock on wood)! When the only tool you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail. Muenkel 0 #27 January 4, 2008 It really depends on the size of the area you need to clear and the amount of snow that is common. I also live in Nor'easter territory and have a huge driveway. I use a 20HP Toro tractor with a 52 inch wide, 2 stage snowblower attachment. It's now approx. 17 years old and it still kicks ass. I don't like to have the driveway plowed because it just doesn't do as neat a job. _________________________________________ Chris
CSpenceFLY 1 #28 January 4, 2008 Best advice I could give you is buy a snow shovel then get in the car and drive south. When you have gone quite a ways south stop, find a place to live and throw the shovel in the yard. If the shovel ever get covered with snow get in the car and drive farther south. I heard it must be at least 10 hp and 2 stage. With this one, you could get the job done! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=exBrz5aQ9Hg&feature=related Yves. rickjump1 0 #30 January 5, 2008 I'm definitely in the sticks, but I can't afford to get another tractor or smaller rig right now so I will have to settle for the snow blower. Sounds like you have the right combo. The guy that does the road once in a while, will come up the driveway with his plow, but I can't depend on him and I need to clear show away from the house during and after construction. Lots of rocks so I will have to be careful there. Ice, is another story.Do your part for global warming: ban beans and hold all popcorn farts.

There are not too many places in the US where at times you don't get cold. I saw snow flurries in Miami as a kid and I sure got cold at Fort Benning. Funny thing about Montana: it can snow any day of the year. I had an old guy tell me how mild the winters were. Later his friends told me he went to Mexico for winter. Lots of seasonal people here.Do your part for global warming: ban beans and hold all popcorn farts.
