ACMESkydiver 0 #1 January 2, 2008 Oopsy! I think we kinda continued last week's thread! Well we always have the rescue diver to thank for bumping our threads regularly. Anyhoo, I'm about to head upstairs and jump on the treadmill. I need to get it done tonight, as I didn't do anything last night. And I have to lose the weight that crept back on by January 31st or Joe won't buy my cool new heart rate monitor for me! I'm heading upstairs...how's everyone else doing?~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action.
NWFlyer 2 #2 January 2, 2008 I was at the gym by 9:30 this morning. Felt good to start the new year with a clear head (not only did I not have a hangover because I didn't drink but it's finally getting to the point where I can breathe out of both nostrils again, which is a bonus!). I wish I could run 1 mile without walking right now. Tell me...have you always been ok running? Or did you have to 'learn' how to do it through a trainer or coach or books or something? Running has always eluded me...I could do aerobics for an eternity -outlasted a lot of people back in the day - but I just couldn't ever get the running down... I'm looking to solidify some goals for myself, and I'm wondering if running just isn't something I should bother to focus on as it will take too much to even get to a basic level. -Have you enjoyed running since you were a kid or is this newer?~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action. tigra 0 #6 January 2, 2008 Weeeelllllllllll, in addition to all the holiday indulgence, I've been fighting off a cold for the past 10 days or so. Between that and the holidays and work, I haven't squeezed in too many workouts lately! I did work out with my trainer last Thursday and I can't believe how exhausted I was. I actually had to stop a few minutes early which I NEVER do- not with the sessions I am paying for anyway! I still don't know if he was pushing really hard to test my limits or if I was just being weak and wimpy! Judging from how sore I was the next day, I'm thinking maybe it was a little of both! Anyway, hopefully I'll get back on track starting tonight. I've got another session with my trainer, so wish me luck! I'm pretty sure I only gained about 5 pounds since Thanksgiving- all things considered, that isn't so bad....... And I LOVE how Joe is offering the heart rate monitor as an incentive. skybytch 273 #7 January 2, 2008 Haven't checked in for awhile. I was up to 5000-7000 steps (2-3 miles) 3 days a week until school got out. Now that it's 2008 and my hike is only 6 months away, it's time to ramp it up. Taking a walking class next semester, that'll be a good 2 hours, 2 days a week; plus four days a week of riding public transportation (that's good for 5000 steps a day by itself), plus morning and evening walks, plus hikes on the weekends... Dunno where I'm going to fit homework and skydiving into that schedule but oh well.

Quote And I LOVE how Joe is offering the heart rate monitor as an incentive. I used to set fitness goals with a reward like 'now I can have a piece of pie'. Uh, how dumb was that?! I cheated last night something aweful and I sure am paying for it. Wayyy too much salt and fat and carbs, and then I actually didn't even work out when I said I was! I passed out tired after finishing laundry. I'm setting a new rule in Jaye land...I at least have to get my cardio started prior to 11am every day -and preferably 5:30am when my hubby gets up. ~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action. tigra 0 #9 January 2, 2008 I knew it would be difficult to stick to a 4-5 day a week workout schedule over Christmas and New Years and I'm OK with that. I'm also OK with my trainer kicking my ass last week- that's what I pay him for. Its just that with that whole combination of factors, he REALLY kicked my ass last week. I still made it to the gym on Saturday, sore legs and all. I just didn't make it Sunday, Monday or yesterday ....... Good louck sticking to the early morning cardio. One thing I LOVE about doing cardio early in the morning is the energy I have all day long because of it. But - and maybe this is just me - I also have a huge appetite all day long on the days I work out in the morning. doh!

I have some very cheap ones here that my sons got from school...I've seen some that have fancy stuff like daily total and memory and things. Do you have a daily step total count goal that you're looking to do to train for your hike?~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action. skybytch 273 #11 January 2, 2008 Yep, I broke down and got a pedometer a month or so ago. Probably completely inaccurate but what the heck. Current goal is 10k steps a day, 6 days a week, for the month of January, then I'm going to up it by 2000 steps a day each month til June. That'll put me at about 60 miles a week by the end of May - about four hours a day of just walking. Then the real push starts to get up to 15 miles a day by the time we hit the trail (2-4 weeks after school ends, depending on weather). I'm gonna have me some rock hard legs by summer. RALFFERS 0 #12 January 2, 2008 Well, I posted updates in another thread, but i've been meaning to start posting here...and since it's a new year n' all, what better time... I've been going to the gym for a few months now, but will admit that only recently have I been going more consistently; and it is thanks to that consistency that I've been seeing the results (posted in the clicky) that I have. Initially, I only started working out to be able to jump, however, I'm seeing a host of other benefits that I'm equally very excited about BUT I've read about some people that once walked with crutches much like I do and now walk without the assistance of anything. Granted, I am never walk "perfectly" per say, but I believe it can be done if I continue to strengthen. Ad, hey, if it doesn't happen I'm OK with that and perfectly content with just being able to skydive. The only thing I have to get better at is something that takes place outside the gym - eating - I have terrible eating habits. Often times I'm rushing early in the morning to get to work, and as a result don't have breakfast and only get to eat hours later, or should I say CHOW down everything in sight when I get home (I don't get a lunch break.) This is not a good way to be going about trying to GAIN weight; any suggestions on what I should be eating (I drink protein shakes for weight gain, but that can only go so far without regular food intake) and how I could portion my meals would be greatly appreciated. MrFreefall383 0 #14 January 3, 2008 Still not working out again, but I don't feel like I've lost much ground, so I'll just start when things settle down. For the last 4 days I've been working on a buddy's car, putting in new performance gauges. They finally worked yesterday, so we went out for a test drive late at night, one gauge failed and forced us back to the garage far too early. Lucky thing though, because some wires from two of the other gauges were too close to the exhaust manifold and lit up like a dry Christmas tree. First time I've seen an engine bay fire up close. So tonight we're changing out a couple sections of damaged hose and wire, and then it should work properly without causing anymore fires. Then I can move on to my own car work. On a not-so-good note, my recruiter got back to me, told me no January ship dates were available, so I'd be shipping out on February 12th."If at first you don't succeed... well, so much for skydiving." - aviation cliche

tigra 0 #16 January 3, 2008 I survived my session with the trainer last night- a really good full body workout plus 30 minutes of cardio beforehand. Yeah! Then I get to the office this morning and a vendor has dropped off a ton of breakfast treats- bagels, sweet rolls and muffins! Geez- why don't they bring in stuff like fruit and yogurt ever???? That was one of the hardest parts about trying to keep from gaining weight working in mortgage for me personally...all of the 'business lunches'...title companies bringing in pies and doughnuts and pastries...latte runs (actually I was ok with that! Sugar-free non-fat is my pref anyhoo). That and I was almost up to smoking a pack a day again...and the drinking. Finance and real estate are high-stress professions and it can take it's toll if you aren't strong enough to just say 'no'. Cheers to you to keep pushing on though! wildcard451 0 #19 January 4, 2008 Well, I guess I am going to start adding stuff into this thread. I sat down and had one of my bosses draw a few labs on me back in mid Dec and nothing will give you a true wake up call like just turning 27 and having a cholesterol profile worse than just about all of the patients currently under your care. To top it off, I am as soggy as I have ever been with the largest gut and the least muscle mass of my life. I knew I had been living the past few years like a soggy sack of shit, but actually seeing the numbers in my chart really stuck it home. Soooo, I started about 2 weeks ago, but with the holidays and all I've done as most everyone does and eat what's cooked, so Currently I'm right about 212 pounds. Last body fat % I did back in Feb was 23.5% and I'm sure it's only worse now, but I'll have that checked next week. So, in essence: 1) Back in the gym 4-5 times a week 2) Once I get a little strength and stamina back will start swimming in the am prior to going to work 3) I know what I need to eat to start changing things, but I think I will have a meeting with our staff dietitian to help that out 4) Taking my meals to work, and not eating stuff from the hospital cafeteria, since 50-75% of my meals from the past 2 years have been hospital food I'll post updates in here to keep me on track, and hopefully another injury won't take me out like what happened early this year.
