I've lived without one for ever and a day... watch dvd's on my laptop and occasional shows on the internet when the post a few days later. But now I want a TV for my never used living room. And so I'm looking online and getting more confused by the second. How important is the HD part? Would it even make a difference if I dont have HD cable? Are brand names important? Is it better to get a separate DVD player or just get one thats got one built into it. Adivce greatly appreciated! And Merry New Year OH YEAH... and how much of a differnence does 6 inches make? going from a 20inch to a 26 inch is quite a big jump in price... does it make that much of a difference when whatchin on tv? Morrison79 0 #10 January 2, 2008 Of course size matters!! But don't buy the off-brand just to gain an extra 6 inches. What is the part you are getting confused by?? At stores like Bestbuy / Circuit City, ect.... you can't even but a standard CRT (tube) TV anymore. The vast majority of them are either LCD, Plasma or DLP. If your looking to hang the TV on the wall than you need an LCD or Plasma. TV signals are being changed in the beginning of 2009 to the "Digital" signal. Any TV you buy now is supposed to have a label warning you if it is compatible with the new technology coming out. If your looking for the best picture than an HDTV is what you want. IF you don't have HD cable you can still get local channels in HD with a special antenna. Not all shows broadcast in HD though,mainly sports and primetime shows only broadcast in HD. DO NOT BUY A TV WITH A DVD PLAYER BUILT IN!!!!! Your better off spending the money on the TV itself, not the built in dvd player. Your best bet is to go to the store and look at the Tv's you can afford. Talk to the sales associate than go home and look up reviews and search online for a better price. As the guy explained it.... if i were to purchase the dvd player separately and wanted the HD quality to it, i'd have to buy the expensive DVD player and then the special cable for it, which is another 50bucks. So... yeah. Got that. BUT! I'm so excited because I get like 10 awesome channels with the rabbit ears!! Whooo hoooo when LOST comes back on, i'll actually be able to watch it live! And Greys anatomy! Wow... i'm going to become a couch potato! I think this is like the millionth thing i've spent my enlistment bonus on. Amazon 7 #16 January 2, 2008 42" is far better and still affordable HD is all important.... 1080P rocks.. although you only get broadcast in 720p/1080i for now. Buy as much resolution that you can. I have a standard Aluminum Antenna in my attic that I bought at lowes to recieve my Local HD stations... The problem that most people have with HD is that unfortunately unlike standard broadcast signals an HD program is an all or nothing thing in that you have to have all of the signal in order to watch the program. It doesn't require a special antenna only one that can pickup all of the signal from local stations whether they are 1 or 10 miles away. You do need a either a build in HD recever (ATSC) or an external one... though I think most TV's on the market todat have them built in. As for what size TV there are online guides that can help you figure out what size TV you might want based on the size of your room and how far you expect to sit from it when viewing... but ultimately you are the one that must decide... if you don't expect to watch that much TV then you might not bother getting anything overly fancy... and a 20" set may be enough... (and a stamp that says HDTV ready or something similar...)
