I'm drinking Belgian Ale

Recommended Posts

shit, it's 9.3 % ALCOHOL.

not so bad being a monk in Belgium, is it?

actually. last year I brewed a Belgian Strong Ale that clocked in at 10.5% alcohol.

I wonder if I should go down to the basement & get a bottle?

For my favorite brewery (Lost Abbey) that's actually sorta low. Some of my favorites there are:

Angel's share (best beer in the world) 11% - and it's a 750ml bottle!

Older Viscosity, perhaps the darkest beer in the world - 12%

Judgment Day, 10.5%

Have to have a designated driver at this place.

Damn dude, what a total bummer.

There is, however, a political movement underway to try and get "gourmet beers" allowed for sale in Alabama. These are pretty much what they are, the best stuff, and pricey, with higher alcohol content. The reasoning is that a 6 pack of these beers would cost about as much as a good bottle of wine, and people won't buy them as much as they would the cheap ass stuff.

It's tough going up against some entrenched bull-headed assholes in the state legislature... :|

Well, I guess it's better to be able to buy/drink somewhat expensive but good quality beer than cheep and stale beer. How much does a good bottle of wine cost in America btw? Just curious.

In the supermarket, I would guess at least $15 and up for the standard size bottles. But I'm not much of a wine drinker.

The main reason for the stupid law is to keep drunkeness as low as possible. I mean what a crock. People can go out and buy a case of 12 or 18 cheap beers and get drunk on that versus buying a 6 pack of really good beer that's meant to be savored and enjoyed, but will get you really drunk if you drink all 6, for the price of a 12 or 18 pack of cheap beer.

The movement is trying to get gourmet beer added to the same classification as wine.

hmm, 9,3%..pretty strong stuff you got there mateB|...personally i think beer with a alcohol% over 7 is too strong, the alcohol kills the beertaste..but it`s a easy way to get drunk-in-a-hurry hehe
cheers!!

I remember, a few years ago, buying a Belgian Cherry Beer (Kriek) cheaper in a pretty expensive restaurant in one of the most expensive restaurants I have been to in Johannesburg in South Africa (Butchers Shop in what was Sandton Square at the time) that was significantly cheaper than exactly the same bottles I had bought a couple of months earlier in bars (not restuarants) in Brugges (Belgium) - and I am not convinced it was all down to exchange rate differences (and it was not when the rand went out to c 20 to £1 - it was more like 10 or 11 at the time).. Never did work out the economics of that..

I always say there's little you can do wrong by having a Westmalle Tripel.

Duvel is a commercial beer and it drinks like one: lots of gas and very fresh. I like it but it doesn't have the body of some other strong beers.

Kwak is nice. So is La Chouffe. Only recently did I get to taste the beer brewed using the champagne method: Malheur Brut. Also pretty good.

Well there's so many decent beers here lol. Haven't tried the hype yet (Westvleteren).
