does anyone have a nissan XTERRA????

Recommended Posts

I have a 2003 Exterra. Gas mileage is pretty poor, about 18-20 mpg overall. I like driving it, but there is rollover potential with the one I have. I don't know about newer ones. My son tells me it's good for 4 wheeling.

I have a red 2000 Xterra with just over 200,000 miles on it, and aftermarket front- and rear- brush guards. Every time I think about trading it in, I just can't do it. The only time it ever failed to start on me is when, about 6 months ago, the 5-year battery went ka-put at 7 years, overnight. With synthetic oil, regular maintenance, and I changed out the timing belt (rubber) which was supposed to last 60k miles, lasted just fine to 130k miles, and did basic tune-up and rear-end service,
I absolutely love this car.

If it were a woman, it would be an immoral androgynous hermaphrodite Cougar with low morals and low maintenance, and a gym membership used regularly...and would make me pay for it in a pound of gold/a pound of flesh...nothing more, nothing less.

I have an '02 5 spd. 4wd. I've only had one problem with it and that was an issue with the power windows. It was covered under a recall so the dealership took care of it.

It's not great on gas mileage, but not too bad either considering.

I have a longer commute these days in traffic and still a great car to me. I really wanted a Pathfinder when I bought it but, my last car I drove the wheels off and it died (timing belt broke and I just had it replaced a couple of years earlier) so I couldn't wait a few months to have the one I wanted special ordered.

No regrets. I like.

my son has one, not the most comfortable ride as compared to higher priced SUV's but seems in line with similar priced vehicles

consider getting the metric sized tires that are used on delivery vans, they are slightly larger, not enough to cause a problem, but made to carry much heavier loads, they will last forever, that way if you are inclined to go off-road you can spin 'em in the dirt without having your money fly away
Give one city to the thugs so they can all live together. I vote for Chicago where they have strict gun laws.

Did that come with a 36" or 48" mower deck?! :D Seriously...I've got an '84 Pontiac Parisienne, with a 305 V8 (carb) and a '89 Chevy pickup, with a 305 (fuel injected)....both of 'em beat that, by at least 10 mpg. Anything under 6 cylinders, oughta be illegal!

A mower deck....hmmmm....I knew it was missing something.....It gets the worst mileage of anything I have ever owned. It started out as my kid's car and I took over the payments.......It wouldn't be my first choice, but I've gotten used to it.

I just bought a new one last sunday (2008). So far it's great, but I will agree with the other ones about the gas mileage. I've burnt up one tank of gas and I figured I averaged 18 mpg.

:D I've got a tandem Mack, that'll do that!

As others have said, they are sturdy and reliable. The older generation versions were are a body on frame construction like a truck, so they were rather stiff/bouncy compared to the more car like ride you'll get from the more car like unibody type construction SUV/crossover type vehicles. Unibody vehicles typically have more useful interior space. I think it is funny that the styling of the rear hatch was dictated by the optional first aid kit.

Since you are asking for opinions, I'll assume you haven't already set you mind on just the XTerra, so what other vehicles are you also considering as alternatives? I am biased toward Hondas, and can recommend any generation of CRV, and if you can withstand the look of it, the Element also has available all wheel drive and an incredibly versatile interior.

Nope. Two engines there, tech, each set up differently. The smaller engine had a chain, but for some reason the bigger V6 had a rubber belt for a few years.

I think this is because the smaller engine XE is the same as what was in the Sentra or something else in the line already, and the V6 in the SE was a newer engine. Still, I can't find anyone who can tell me why they used a rubber belt in the more expensive model, which if it were to break, would be devastating to the engine.

...oh, yeah, I can...have you seen Nissan parts pricing?!

Many, if not most engines have rubber timing belts. They are definitely quieter, probably cheaper. They aren't just rubber, they have internal 'cords' that are intended to make them resistant to stretching over time which would alter the timing of the camshaft relative to the crank. A metal chains will definitely wear, effectively stretching. By the time you are supposed to replace the belt, you are pretty close to probably needing to replace the water pump anyway.

there is about 1, 2.4 liter 4 cyl out there for avery 5000 v6 xteras (I would guess I am being generous about those number also). when you talk about the xterra, it is all but assumed it is the v6.

p.s. I have been working for nissan for over 15 years.

the xterra is very reliable.

The Element has super stain resistant (even ketchup wipes right off) seat fabric and a vinyl type floor instead of carpet, making it really well suited for those that participate in messy outdoor activities. You can also put bikes completely inside, and even sleep inside on fold flat seats.

Many can't stand the styling, but the Element is very unique and versatile. They are built and were designed in Ohio.
