kallend 2,030 #1 December 17, 2007 From AVWEB: NITROGEN USED TO FILL AIRCRAFT OXYGEN SYSTEMS (www.avweb.com/eletter/archives/avflash/1016-full.html#196776) Airlines all over the world are being warned to check to make sure there's actually oxygen in their aircraft oxygen systems after an embarrassing mix-up by Qantas Airlines at Melbourne International Airport. For ten months, crews have been filling airliner oxygen systems from a nitrogen cart that's supposed to be used to fill tires. The mistake went unnoticed until a couple of weeks ago when an observant aircraft engineer spotted service workers using the cart. "He was walking around the plane and asked what they were doing. When they said they were topping up the oxygen, he said, 'No you're not, that's a nitrogen cart,'" an unnamed source told The Age.... The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one.

Bolas 5 #4 December 17, 2007 I can think of some people that may switch their flights to Qantas now for this added benefit. NOX on every flight. Stupidity if left untreated is self-correcting If ya can't be good, look good, if that fails, make 'em laugh.

SARLDO 0 #8 December 17, 2007 If these guys mixed up what went where during servicing, it's going to get really interesting when they blow a tire. "Always do right. pilotdave 0 #9 December 17, 2007 In the military, mixups with gas bottles for inflating tires has killed people. Hook up a 5000 psi nitrogen bottle to an aircraft tire, and the rim will fail instantly, launching the tire off the wheel at high speed. People have literally lost heads because of that. Now they're supposed to inflate tires in cages and use long hoses to the bottles. Dave
SpeedRacer 1 #10 December 17, 2007 I think he was talking about what would happen if you filled up the tires with oxygen instead of nitrogen. Speed Racer --------------------------------------------------

Dave I have seen the damadge that a large tractor tire on a split rim has done when it blew the fuck up. Tire cages are a must if you want to keep your arms, legs, hands, or head!"The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P
