Advice on fit....

Recommended Posts

I just bought a used Javelin rig yesterday. I am a little unsure of the fit..... Any suggestions on what to look for? Is it a big deal that the container slides up my back a few inches. I can barley fit my fist between my shoulder and the harness when it is on. I also have the leg straps as tight as they go and feels very tight on me when I do so.

Take it to the dropzone tommorrow; don't expect to jump it until you've spent a good while with an experienced instructor, experienced rigger, or someone like that to check that kind of thing.

How you adjust it can matter; how you put it on, all kinds of things. Being able to get your fist in between your harness and shoulders doesn't sound really good to me, but I'm not seeing just how you're doing it, or how big you are, or how hard you have to try.

You really, really want to have a real person involved in this. Tonight, get to know your rig; how it's put together, how the mechanical pieces work, where the strength and stress points are.

Then tommorrow you'll be more ready for the fitting session. Don't be in a hurry. It might be that it fits perfectly, it might be that it doesn't, and it might be just that it's OK but not perfect. That's where having someone work with you on it will make a difference.

Thank you... I plan on having the reserve repacked, the main aired out. I also need to do some practice throws on a creeper..... I am definatley not going to jump it until my rigger gives me the go ahead. If I were going to make alterations is it something that my rigger can do or do I have to send it to sun path? I think the only problem is the distance between my leg pads and the top of my harness.

That's why looking at it in person makes a difference. It could be that it's too long; that's not something that your local rigger can do unless they're a master rigger with the right harness machine and enough practice doing it that you'd trust them with it.

But really -- don't unpack the reserve or the main until you've gone through the whole fit thing with someone tommorrow.

I wish I could..... I can try my best to describe the fit though..... The chest strap is long but i loop it back and can stow it with no chance of coming loose.... The leg straps are as tight as I can make them and they feel VERY snug on my legs... The spot where all the leg webbing meets is at my belt line roughly.... The problem as I see it is the shoulder harness. I can fit a fist between my shoulder and the pad and when I lift it I get no seperation from my shoulder. When I did this squat thing with the container on the edge of my bed the container moved up on my back to the point where the three ring was just below my ears. I leaned my body of the edge of my bed and the container slid a few inches up my back. When I tighten the chest strap its impossible for me to squirm my way out of the harness (I tried alot). Hmmmmm.... Anything else that would be important? I have very good flexibility in the harness and its comfortable on me, hopefully not because its too big.

you need to be considerate of how MUCH the container moves UPwards on you...
It will affect where your main pilot chute handle winds up at deployment alt.,
and could make for an awkward pull.[:/]

..IF the 3 rings are waaay up , near your ears,, as you say...will you even be able to reach your toggles,,, and slider??:|

Try it out from a suspended harness set-up at the dz.
I once had Javelin resize a harness for me and they did a great job... good luck..:)

Jeez!
I never tried that bed test.
First of all, you can only accurately measure a harness while the canopies are still packed.
So leave the canopies inside the container until your rigger has checked how it fits on you.
Far more accurate to suspend your Javelin from risers.
Alternately, ask the tallest and strongest guy on your DZ to lift you off the floor.
Expect to have a 3 or 4 finger-wide gap between your shoulder and the shoulder pad.

Don't consider your self stupid because you are "newbie". We are all newbies to some extent. Just keep in mind before money exchanges hands get all your questions answered.
