Thinking of moving to SLC

Recommended Posts

I am seriously thinking of moving to Salt Lake City in the next few months for a job and would like some advice from others who have lived there (especially those have relocated to SLC). The primary attraction for me is the skiing, but mountain biking and climbing are high on the interest list too.

Specific information on the following would really be appreciated:

1)areas of SLC recommended for a 29 year old guy who enjoys the city life and being able to walk to restaurants, bars, coffee shops, etc. (I have no interest in the picket fence and cul-de-sac)

2)housing prices for a decent apartment in areas above

3)social activities for one that doesn't belong to the Mormon faith

4)the availability of non-Mormon single chicks (hell, I'm a single guy)

5)the deal on the nightlife...I'm not really into clubs but enjoy having a familiar bar to hang out during the evenings

6)of course...DZs in the area if you've been to 'em

I've heard the church can be a stifling social force if you're not a member. I try to mind my own business and don't really care about one's religion, but have you noticed it really affecting your activities (or lack thereof)?

If you have lived in SLC for several years, how do you feel about your decision now, after the novelty has worn off?

Thanks!

DZ's in the area; there are two. One is more "family" oriented and the other is the "Red Bull" crowd. Both have turbine aircraft, both are nice places to jump. One has huge landing area, other doesn't.
One overlooks the lake and very few roads, other is right on the freeway and is near a tunnel.
SLC is a fun place, lots to do if you're into outdoor sports n' activities.
Mormon influence is strong, but it's less than its ever been. Pubs are for beer, clubs are for harder stuff and that's a serious PITA for some.
Between very high alpine-type areas to deep sand deserts, there is always something to do. Or not.

Grew up in SLC, couldn't wait to escape!

However, Things have changes....ALOT. It is actually a fun metropolitan city with the exception of maybe a handful of European and American cities it has become a fave.

and if you like the outdoors shit.... Fuckin unbelievable (that hasn't changed). Oh the other thing, beautiful blond hair women...holy crap everywhere. The whole Mormon influence has greatly diminished but the good things remained.

Go You won't regret it. However I still live in Phoenix AZ. for a reason........

Don't knock those Mormon girls. They don't drink, they don't smoke, they don't party big time ... but in the five years I lived in SLC they provided many evenings of warm entertainment,
And if you're really good to them, they won't invite you home to meet the parents.

MOVE THERE! Salt Lake is a fantastic place to live. If I could work year round I would still live there. There are alot of Mormons, but there are alot of other people too. There are many activities and things to do concentrated in the valley. (You mentioned walking distance.) If you are into the outdoors you have the mountains, fishing, hiking, camping, biking, skiing, skydiving, etc... The price of living is a little higher than some places, but much lower than others. It is a very clean city, beer is 3.2 percent alcohol, liquor must be purchased from a State owned liquor store. (I guess I am a little biased, as I was born and raised there. I miss it every day!)

I moved here from San Diego in 1995. I enjoy it here because I love the mountains, the desert, the backpacking, skiing, hanggliding (prior to my accident), skydiving.

The "Avenues" in downtown Salt Lake, Park City, Sugar House, are the happening places here. Night life is nothing like San Diego, but the outdoors here is nothing like San Diego.

Liquor laws are unlike anywhere in the world. Its strange, but no big deal unless your an alcoholic.

The religion here is no big deal. My neighbors have been mowing my lawn in the Summer and Fall, shoveling my driveway and handicap ramp in the Winter, and their deep in their faith that I don't share. Good people.

Good Luck!

I would recommend Park City. I lived there for 3 years. It is a short commute to SLC. When the inversions settle in to the SL valley you will have clear skies up at PC. Those inversions seem to last forever.

PC is not cheap but that would be my first choice if I were to move back to Utah.
