normiss 858 #1 November 29, 2007 Sony Blu-Ray (I effin HATE Sony!!!) or the Toshiba "industry standard" HDDVD? It's Beta vs. VHS all over again isn't it??? I'm just starting to look at the new players...whilst drooling over the new Yamaha! damn!!!!! makes my current Yamaha look like a mere toy...
PhreeZone 20 #2 November 29, 2007 Neither is a clear "winner" The isue is that there are so many titles exclusive to just one format that if you want to watch HD you almost need both players. Planet Earth is about the only thing out there that did it right and released it in both formats, everything else is based on which studio published it.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
Icon134 0 #3 November 29, 2007 DSE mentions the format wars occasionally and seems to think Blu-Ray might be doing better then HD-DVD... and... damn... that yamaha is nice... edited to add... that like phree said there isn't really a winner just losers (and that would be the consumer... ) Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife... quade 4 #6 November 29, 2007 My personal opinion is that at this very moment in time, Blu-ray has a "slight" advantage because some people have figured out you can buy a PSP and play them. Right now, that's the least expensive Blu-ray player out there and you get a game console tossed in for "free". quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
FreeflyChile 0 #7 November 29, 2007 I think you meant PS3 I have heard that Blu-ray has a slight edge...partially because of the PS3's ability to play them straight out of the box. I have a PS3 but only 1 blu-ray movie -- they're too expensive and the selection is kind of lacking at the moment (same for hd-dvd, there aren't enough movies to warrant buying even the 360 add-on). Also, while I love hi-def, I am not about to spend 30 bucks a disk to re-buy movies I already have on standard DVD. I heard in Europe, Blu-ray is killing HD-DVD. kingbunky 3 #10 November 29, 2007 unlike the beta-vhs debacle however, the media for both is the same size. universal players are already here, though expensive. they'll come down, and you won't have to chose. Harksaw 0 #12 November 29, 2007 Blu-Ray has consistently sold more movies. See attached image. panic-button 0 #14 November 29, 2007 The main down fall for Blu-Ray is the stance they will not let the Porn industry release any movies on the format, and HD-DVD doesn't have an issue with Porn. This is the same Sony downfall as beta-vhs, Sony did the same thing in the 70's and they lost out. http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070112-8602.html http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2704,2085645,00.asp

normiss 858 #16 November 29, 2007 Sony has stated their format is available to all genres ... so it would seem that wouldn't stop anything... who REALLY wants to see porn in HD anyway??? isn't that like seeing tittie dancers in daylight???
billvon 3,079 #17 November 29, 2007 >who REALLY wants to see porn in HD anyway? Apparently there's a market. I mean, who wants to see sitcoms in HD? Does it even matter? But there's a market for that too.
Brian425 0 #18 November 30, 2007 You can have a HDDVD player for less than $200. I got a Toshiba A2 for $99.99 with 5 free movies for my sister. I then saw the Toshiba A3 for $199 with 10 free movies. I don't see how you can go wrong. One advantage that HDDVD has is it is backward compatible with regular DVD (SDDVD). Another advantage; but of limited appeal to everyone is that HDDVD has a functioning ethernet port. This can be used for firmware updates or for the web enabled features of the new movies. The war is not dead. I went HDDVD over Blu-Ray due to cost. The only time you should look down on someone is when you are offering them your hand. skymedic 0 #19 November 30, 2007 Bluray is outselling HD DVD 3 to 1 in Europe right now. So my feeling is blue ray is gonna win. OR there gonna kiss and make up and make ONE standard. but even if that happened tomorow its gonna take 18+ months to get it all squared away...so here we are at the stalemate. Personally I think both formats will be around for quite a while, I don't see any winners in the near future. --"Someday you will die and somehow somethings going to steal your carbon" -MM
