Hausse 0 #26 November 28, 2007 Quotetwo days on the board.. and you'll be making turns.. that's when the fun starts. Snowboarding: Day 1: pain Day 2: some pain, but turns start working one way Day 3: turns both ways.. Day 50 (when you get really good and start doing the fun stuff): A LOT of pain from then on.. big time fun Fixed it;)
livendive 8 #27 November 28, 2007 Drink. Fall. Get back up. Drink. Nurse sore muscles. Repeat. Whatever edge is closest to whatever direction you're going should be at least very slightly elevated. Failure to do so will result in "catching an edge". "Catching an edge" will result in you being promptly deposited on either your tailbone or your face. The speed with which such deposition will occur is directly related to how fast you were going when you decided to catch said edge. Oh, and don't break both fucking wrists at the same time. Dazzle 0 #29 November 28, 2007 Quote I was looking for a winter hobby up here in New England, and I figured why not try snowboarding? So as I usually do I put the cart before the horse and went out and got me a new board, bindings, and boots. Then last Saturday I took a loooong 4 hour ride to Maine, only to spend the day falling on my ass. It went something like this. I went down hill, gained speed...went "aack" tried to slow down then bang on my ass. Oh, and yes I did a lesson. Didn't help. I ended up taking the board off towards the end of the day and walked down the slope (easy slope too). I had a trainee instructor friend teach me for a day. Was really helpful doing 1 on 1 instruction for that first morning. By the afternoon I was going ok on the green slopes although still falling over lots. Early lessons was the best for me. I was used to skiing though After a week though I got fed up with the occasional falls and put the skis back on and didn't regret it at all
DJL 235 #30 November 28, 2007 Put on a lot of pads - like a hockey goalie - and go back out. The first thing that matters is that you can't be afraid of falling."I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher

johndh1 0 #32 November 28, 2007 One half-day lesson, then another full-day lesson the next day. WRIST GUARDS, GOOD TAILBONE PAD, HELMET. Don't be afraid to fall, and flat terrain is not your friend. Lean down the hill - as far as you can. You will feel at first like you're leaning farther than you really are. Don't give up if it's something you really want to do.Roll Tide Roll
dfairleigh11 0 #33 November 28, 2007 The only reason to wear ass pads is to keep your ass warm on the lift Bottom line here is to get your ass out there and keep doing it - you'll get better eventually. If you don't... ...pick another sport. "We'll start the ass kissing with you"
johndh1 0 #34 November 29, 2007 Still, the tailbone pad helped my fear of falling backward, and seriously improved my performance. It worked that way it should, too. I probably weigh a lot more than the average boarder (not fat).Roll Tide Roll
Hausse 0 #35 November 29, 2007 I didn't get any gear till I was really good and I think it helped me improve my abilities on big air because it gave me more confidence so I wouldn't necessarily start out with anything else but a helmet and wrist guards. JSBIRD 1 #39 November 29, 2007 Keep your knees bent, and keep most of your weight on your front foot. Trying to lift your back foot will help here. Day 2 or 3 will be your breakthrough day. Hausse 0 #41 November 29, 2007 How I learned it: I took 2 privat lessons and at the end of the day I took the lift to the highest mountain with my dad. If you are standing up there and you have to get down you learn fast (even though I was sliding down most of the time). Then another bunch of lessons and a lot of practice.
