NWFlyer 2 #29 November 20, 2007 Now I'm drooling. Sounds yummmmmmmmy. How can you call it a butter cake if you use margarine, though?"There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. normiss 858 #30 November 20, 2007 do NOT question my grandmother! I have always wondered the same thing though...wondered who in the family changed it from butter...Granny always used lard as I recall in her other dishes...so it HAD to be butter when she made it! NWFlyer 2 #31 November 20, 2007 If I made it I suspect I'd substitute butter."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. flygirl1 0 #32 November 21, 2007 My Family, Pumpkin pie, Stuffing, sweet potatoes with caramelized pecan topping, cranberry dumplings, roasted fall veggies, buttermilk mashed potatoes, As for traditions we always get those poppers that have funny hats, stupid jokes and little prizes in them Fly like a girl
tigra 0 #33 November 21, 2007 I do the poppers on Christmas Eve. Last year I made a Tyler Florence recipe- sweet potatoes mashed with bananas, butter and honey and topped with a pecan crumble. It was a HUGE hit and I think that's a new Thanksgiving tradition for me. I never liked sweet potatoes when I was a kid because my mom always used the canned ones- very icky! SkydiveStMarys 0 #34 November 21, 2007 Stuffing NOT dressing and stuffed into the turkey not in a casserole dish. BobbiA miracle is not defined by an event. A miracle is defined by gratitude.
grannyinthesky 0 #35 November 21, 2007 It's gotta be stuffing and IN THE TURKEY. None of that in a baking dish nonsense. Pat"safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490
tigra 0 #36 November 21, 2007 I think stuffing stuffed into the turkey is back in style- the stuffing police have lightened up and now just remind you to check not only the temperature of the meat, but the stuffing as well. Yes- it does taste better that way. Anything that doesn't fit in the turkey will get cooked in a cassarole dish and used for sandwiches later in the week! PLFXpert 0 #38 November 21, 2007 Cafeteria food. For the past couple years Billy & I have spent Turkey Day with my grandma in her (awesome!) assisted living facility. She has this super-cute condo in the hospital there, but the food is lousy. This year I'm packing my own veggie wrap sandwich & booze!I do miss Thanksgiving with the fam as it was one of the only times I'd ever see them and--like everyone else--I LOVED the traditional dishes we'd have (probably a little different than others, but "home" to me. Oh, and I HATE cooking. Raw food is ma fav-or-it!To keep the thread in the spirit it was intended, I'll answer: spiced fruit. My grandma used to make THE BEST! PLFXpert 0 #39 November 21, 2007 Quote My father in law starts making Bloody Marys bright and early and all day long, they are GOOD!! And after everyone gets up from having eaten too much, the family tradition is to roll on the floor to compress everything in the full belly... silly... but tradition. And you just can't screw with a tradition like rolling. I like you.I mean, the rolling thing is kinda weird, but my family does the drinking thing bright & early, too.Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back. pinkfairy 0 #49 November 21, 2007 Oooooh! I want turkey! I make a really juicy, tasty turkey with sweet potato mash, peas and cream gravy, but I've only made it a couple of times for my birthday and new year's eve. There never seems to be an excuse for making it. Relax, you can die if you mess up, but it will probably not be by bullet. I'm a BIG, TOUGH BIGWAY FORMATION SKYDIVER! What are you?
