Online communities - research

Recommended Posts

I have to do a 10+ page research paper for English class. I've decided to examine the sociological significance of online communities (like this one!).

If you are a user or even just a lurker on one or more online communities - forums, MMPORPG's, social networking sites, SecondLife type VR sites, etc. - and you'd be willing to be share your thoughts/experiences with me (knowing that what you say may be used in my paper), please send me a PM. Ideally I'd like to hear from both long time net users (those who remember usenet, those who've been active in a particular forum/game for 3+ years, etc) and people who are new to online communities.

Thanks!

Damn, see what I mean. I've been waiting to hear if you got my package or not.

That's the last time I go out of my way and mail you some thing.

Go ahead and post the questions.

Okay! B|

Please give as much or as little information as you would like. I need your real name and your permission to quote you in my paper (you will be credited) but your answers will be useful even if I can't quote you. It'd be helpful to have your screenname as well. You can send answers by PM or email to skybytch at gmail dot com. Thank you very much for the assistance!

Real name -

Screen names you use (and communities they are associated with if you use multiple) -

Geographic location (country only is fine, state and country if U.S. is preferred) -

Occupation -

Does your job involve being online for part or all of your work day?

When were you involved with your first online community?

What online communities are you/have you been a part of?

How long have you been/were you a participant in each one?

If you chose to leave a community in the past, what the reason?

How involved in the community(s) are you/were you? (ie non-registered lurker, registered lurker, occasional poster, regular poster, post whore, moderation team, administrator)?

How much time do you spend online (non-work or school related) on an average day?

Approximately what percentage of that time spent is spent in each community?

What non-online activities (other than work) do you participate in? How much time do you spend on those in an average week?

What benefits do you believe you get from the online communities you are a part of?

What downsides do you see in being a part of an online community?

Do you feel that the majority of people you interact with online are your friends or acquaintances? How would you define the difference between the two?

Have you met any of the people you interact with online IRL?

What were the circumstances of those meetings (ie at an event specifically for members of an online community, because one of you traveled to the geographic location of the other(s))?

If you have met others IRL, did you interact with them any differently than you would with someone you just met but hadn't spent time online "with"?

Has being involved in an online community changed any aspect of your life? If so, what aspect(s)? For good or for bad?

Have you dated someone you met on a non-dating community? If so, how is/was that different than dating someone you met in a more traditional way? Did you meet this person IRL prior to starting at "relationship"?

Have you ever been so involved with an online community that you neglected RL community/social opportunities?

Anything else you want to tell me?
