The iPhone is:

The best cell phone I have ever owned.

By far the best mini-web browser out there. All the others suck compared.

The best PDA email.

The worst camera.

The coolest Map app with real time traffic.

Useless as an iPod even with 8GB.

The coolest keyboard ever.

If I dont shave, it pinches my cheek hairs between the chrome and the screen.

Overall, the coolest product I own.

The Register said it was a non-event. No lines, more clerks than punters, etc.

Still, I'd like to get my hands on a cracked one. Would probably be fun. :S

If I had to have a 'do it all' device, I'd get one of the newer smartphones. Windows mobile, all the PDA functions, MP3 player, data and GPS.

I refer you to a recent New York Times review of a brand new smartphone using Windows Mobile 6.

Here's the money quote:

"There you have it: the Shadow, one of the least expensive smartphones on the market, loaded with features, feeling luxurious and looking stunning in your hand. For once, you don’t have to be jealous of the much cooler phones available in Europe.

But then you turn the thing on.

Unfortunately, after they did such a great job designing the hardware, T-Mobile’s chief executive and his ex-Apple designer punted on the software. They equipped this phone with Microsoft’s Windows Mobile 6. As it turns out, that decision is just as much an impediment to the Shadow’s greatness as AT&T exclusivity is to the iPhone.

Frankly, Windows Mobile 6 is a mess. Common features require an infinitude of taps and clicks, and the ones you need most are buried in menus. Apparently the Windows Mobile 6 team learned absolutely nothing from Windows Mobile 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5."

I've never seen an iPhone, they aren't available up here in Canada. If they did release it I wouldn't get one because the only network they would run on is Rogers. Rogers, whose coverage in my part of Canada sucks, and whose contract with me thankfully just ran out. I got 2 new phones from Virgin Mobile that are going to cost me 35% of what I paid Rogers per month. My hate for Rogers is too great to ever permit me to get an iPhone....but I digress.

But, I have played with an iPod Touch....what an incredible piece of technology! It's the software design, not the pretty case. The cel phones I have owned can do a ton of things...I can't be bothered to learn anything beyond the most basic stuff because they are such a complete pain to navigate around in. If the iPhone lets you do the main things quickly and easily, never mind elegantly, you're better off with it than something that can do ten million things but you can't figure out how to use it because it's just too difficult.

Replying to my own message because an update is in order.

I exchanged my iPhone again last night. I was reading some support posts and someone had the same problem I was having. Turns out, when they switched the phone prior they used the same SIM card so the phone wouldn't need to be activated. This time we switched the phone and activated it with the new SIM card and I have as good of a signal as I did with my Verizon phone.

I bought mine at a local Apple store, so fortunately it was pretty quick for an exchange. I would recommend if you have a store close by, you go that route rather than ordering one online.

Also, you have 14 days to exchange the phone for a new one otherwise you will get a refurbished replacement after that. You do get a fresh 14 day return policy after you exchange.

AT&T will allow you to cancel the service with a full refund of the activation fees within 30 days of activation.

I am now a very happy iPhone owner and wouldn't think of going back to just a "regular" cell phone.

Murray,

To be fair. that review is going to be a tad slanted against anything MS. We both know Pogue is about as big of a Apple Fanboy as they come. (Kinda like us) but he gets paid for it. He was one of the few to get the iPhone prior to release, he makes money by writing books about apple products(i.e. iphone, leopard, etc.)...so I tend to take some of what he says about other stuff with a grain of salt. Now with that being said, winblows mobile 6 truly makes NOOOO sense. almost as fucked up and confusing as my KRZR
