Had a great ride this weekend, and figured I'd see if any of you's are training for something too.

Just did a 78 mile ride at a 20 mph average (ok ok, the Garmin says 19.9, but rounding it up sounds better! lol). I'm pretty stoked since its my longest ride in a long, long time, and the best average I've done on a 50+ mile ride.

In 5 weeks, I'd riding in the Tour of Tucson: 109 miles, no huge hills, but still some terrain. I'd love to be able to finish in Platinum time (<5h, so >21.8 mph) but that may be a bit of a stretch!

What about you?

Sounds like a good ride. Where do you do your riding? I'm not currently training for anything but I love those long 1/2 day rides. I normally just go out for about 35-40 miles. I have never tried to go further. About half way through my trip, I start having a difficult time staying on the saddle. Any tips for a sore ass?

20 average on 78 mile ride is great in my book.
I unfortunately have not been on my bike in over a month now. Just busy with some other things and was trying to let my legs heal up fully. Now that they are, it's too cold. haha
not really. Maybe I'll get on my bike this week once or twice.

When I was out in AZ it looked like there was some good places to ride. No fair>:(

My favorites:
a) Brooks saddle.http://www.wallbike.com/Brookssaddles.html
b) Shorts with a gel-filled chamois.
c) Suspension seat-post.

Beware the Brooks saddle has a break-in period of several hundred miles.

Umm, might I remind you that you live in GEORGIA? I haven't heard of any recent ice storms and I don't recall October being all that nippy. ;) Go get on your bike! Just don't ride in traffic. For instance, I would stay OFF of GA 400. (Yeah, okay, so I don't ride at all and should probably keep my mouth shut here, but I couldn't resist! :))

No I was waiting for someone to call me out on the cold reference.

I totally have a rule that below 60 and I don't usually ride. But yeah, it is above 60 here lately and so I really should be riding some.

Pussy.

:P

2 weekends ago, when we started our ride at 6:30, it was 47F. And I didnt check the weather beforehand, and only had a short sleeve shirt and shorts. BRRRRRR!

The cycling around Tucson is awesome. Lots of out of the way roads with minimal trafic, some terrain, some long straights (and if you are masochistic, there is Mount Lemon). Its nice.

As far as the saddle soreness, I've had good success with the E3 Form Gel saddle (but with saddles, you need to try a few to see which fits you) and good shorts. I cant bring myself to spend $300 on a top level pair of bibs, but compared to the mid range stuff I've tried, I REALLY prefer my Ultra Bibs. They are not gel, but I've found the ones with Gel, while confy for short rides, give me irritations on longer ones (I put that on the fact that they cannot manage the moisture are effectively as a open cell pad). For the shorter rides, I dont mind these Gel ones.

Friday I had to bike home from where I go to school (about 40 miles) in cloudy, windy, and sub-50 degree (F) conditions through some pretty hilly terrain. It sucked. I was on a bike trip this summer that covered around 500 miles and that was pretty fun. There was a day where I averaged just under 20 miles per hour for 70 or 80 miles through some rolling hills while carrying 50+ pounds of gear. It was an experience to say the least, but you don't always have much choice when you always have to beat sunset to the next town.

Oh, and I do bike out to the DZ on occasion. I did for my first jump course and it's something that I like to do time to time.

Agreed! B|
Cold doesn't bother me, but what does bother me is starting the ride with temps > 32 and snow-melt on the road. Then during the ride it gets dark and the temps drop to >:(

I just don't enjoy doing two-wheel drifts around the corners.:S

I hate ice. Most of my crashes come from commuting in icy conditions, except for the 2 where I learned that I'd worn out my big chain ring and the chain would drop off when I stood on it with one of the big cogs selected.

Good effort - I am training for the NZ Round Taupo Race which is a century. My target this year (first time) is somewhere around 5 hours. If i can go under it will be great. The first 60 or so miles is pretty much constant hills!!!

http://www.cyclechallenge.com/

Went for a ride this morning here in wellington, round the bays with three 15 minute hills thrown in. Put on my heavy training wheels with an 11-21 cassette on to build power (ouch). Have a 40k bunch ride tonight - loving it, and the new bike is a joy!!!

Go to a good store and sit on some. You need to have a saddle that adequately supports your "sit bones" - the bones at the bottom of your pelvis. SPecialised do a really good range of saddles called the toupe that have really good reviews. Saddles are a really personal thing, i had massive problems till i tried a Fixik Arione and now i have them on both of my bikes. The right saddle and a good pair of shorts (and plenty of riding) will cure those problesm.

Stop it.. No one like a bragger... :P

I'd really like to break that 5h mark for our race here, but my realism is keeping me in check!. One thing that does suck is that, although we'll have transponders for finish time, the start time is the gun: with 15,000 expected participant, that'll be several minutes lost...

This weekend will be my 1st imperial century. Is it sad that century is just a training ride? [:/]:D.

Oh, by the way: now ridding with Neuvation M28 Aero2 wheels and loving them.

That is a bugger - not a lot you can do about the start time thing other than measure your own time and have the satisfation. (Or get there really early and be at the front!) Fortunately for Taupo the transponders go as you cross the line (i believe)

Nah Centuries are good as a training ride - I Need to up my distances closer to the 160km required for my training ride, but its just finding the time!!

I know one guy who is doing the enduro race at Taupo - TWICE round the lake! (320km) and there is also the crazy 4 times round the lake race.

I have heard good things about the neuvations. I see something more aero in my future..... Need to pay the bike off first though!

ohhh - meet my new baby http://www.orbea-usa.com/fly.aspx?mid=a300&layout=viewproduct&taxid=534
- and yeah, when I'm done paying for that something that begins with a z and ends with a p would make it look even nicer.

You guys have any experience with flashpoint wheels?

Remster enjoy your long rides, I'll stick to 50's for now as I have to go run a bunch right after..... :S

Oh wow - thats a nice looking TT bike.
No real opinion on the flashpoint wheels - i know people who have them, no complaints.
Something like a Zipp 606 wheelset would look really nice on that i think (especially if you could get those limited edition blue ones!);)

Or maybe some mavic cosmic carbones?
