homer 0 #1 May 17, 2005 Cancer will affect everyone at some point in our lives it may be a loved one, friend or you. May is Cancer awareness month and I was wondering who is a Cancer survivor, what type of cancer, and how long has it been. I will be walking in my first relay for life on Friday with my father in the survivors lap. I had matastic(?) testicular cancer that spread to the lymph nodes along the spine. On Sunday May 22 it will be five years since my last dose of chemotherapy, I'm still cancer free and will OFFICIALLY be in remission . It is the reason I'm back in skydiving. 30 years ago she came to watch me jump - I lost a layer of skin to the new anti-skid on the 182 strut and bled like a stuck pig. Our JM broke his ankle landing in a gopher hole, her request - stop jumping - I did. Never lost the love of the sport, just chose a greater love. Six years ago she was diagnosed with a form of breast cancer that required a very aggressive treatment including bone marrow transplant. After her terrific attitude and spirit and her determination to fight with all she had I saw a change in her. The little things that used to bother her no longer mattered. She started enjoying life while she was living it rather than spending all her energy preparing for tomorrow. She never forgot how much I loved jumping and this spring she returned the gift I gave her 30 years ago - by giving it back. Her last checkup was good - no sign of return, she goes with me to the DZ and watches me jump and with me to the tunnel and sits outside the glass giving me hand signals to keep my chin up - arch - and get my legs together. Clouds do have silver linings - I know - I've seen them. --------------------------------------------- Every day is a bonus - every night is an adventure. As for the outlook on life I still took things for granted,was a bit more reckless and smug. It took a tour in Iraq to give me the out look I have know. There something about having bullets fly within feet of you to make you realize life is short and to enjoy every minute of it. Because you may not have a tomorrow and then it's to late. Rdy2skydive 0 #12 May 18, 2005 Thyroid cancer that never follows the rules - twice. Still at high risk for it to return and being watched for two other forms of cancer. After my last surgery, the damage to my neck and shoulder was pretty extensive. I couldn't turn my head or lift my right arm. I told my Physical Therapist he had one month to get me back in shape because I wanted to start learning to skydive. It was two more years before I was well enough to make my first jump. SkydiveNFlorida 0 #13 May 18, 2005 Thyroid cancer here as well. Went though surgery a few months ago and feel fine now but it was a rough ride. Of course, after radioactive treatment one is always wary. The outlook is generally better for TC than many other forms. Cancer is scary stuff. My best to all who have it or love someone who does. Glad to hear you're okay - it was a rough ride for me too - both times. We're fortunate that it's frequently very treatable. Taking care of myself is a top priority now. SkydiveNFlorida 0 #16 May 18, 2005 Yeah, so much for rare, my aunt had it, too. And, supposedly it isn't the genetic type. They removed my whole thyroid due to the size of the tumor. I gained some weight from the ordeal and still haven't taken it off yet. But, i'm on a good dose of Levothyroxine now so am at least balanced, now I need to work on the weight. I'm glad you're ok, too! Best of health to you, too! Once you go through something like this it changes your outlook on life, that's for sure. I am also doing my best to take care of myself even moreso than I already was, but I admit it is difficult to find the time for the gym with school and work. I have yr two on my wall in my office, framed beautifully by my bosses at work and given to me as a gift. Just jumped with Mike O in Perris, he was there too!!
