I can only speak to Dell.

Price - You get what you pay for. Their primary market is people who want a computer cheap. That is what they get, a cheap computer.

Support - Dell sucks. I have firsthand knowledge of their philosophy about price, service, & profit.

Reliability - Directly dependent on price. Comparing machines of supposed equal performance ability, you will generally find Dell to be cheaper, and less reliable.

It's really just a matter of economics and each company deciding what their primary market is. Dell has decided to be the Wal-Mart of personal computers. Which is fine, as long as purchasers know that going in. You also need to learn to ignore all the industry awards where they all pat each other on the back.

in a business environment, I wouldn't be quite that hard on Dell.
They have very attractive leasing programs that the bean counters love, the business support isn't bad - of course it always helps to have a skilled staff in house. Add numbers (quantity) to the equation and they're as good as any other product for the price.
Yes, IBM's are better...at almost 3 times the price they should be.
Apples are not on the corporate environment by a huge margin. They account for less than 10 % of desktops worldwide. Laptops sell better, generally in the consumer market.
