Shotgun 1 #26 September 29, 2007 Where my mom lives, on Lake LBJ in Texas, two people have died this year from an amoebic infection that they acquired in the lake. I had been swimming in that lake around the time the first case occurred, and the water was so warm that it almost felt like a hot tub, warmer than I recall it ever being out there. And apparently since the second case, the lake has been almost empty because people are freaked out.
skymama 37 #27 September 29, 2007 Three boys have died from amoebas in Central FL this summer. Again, a senseless death. Here the families are doing something right by taking their kids out for some summer fun instead of sitting around the house, and the kid is dead in a few days. They've posted signs around the lakes now, hopefully people will pay attention and read them. Best bet, if lake water is above 80 degrees, don't put your head under water! She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon
SpeedRacer 1 #28 September 29, 2007 very sad. but I should point out here that NO vaccine gives 100% guaranteed protection. Vaccines push the odds in your favor, but if your immune system is down, or you get a big dose of the infectious agent, you could still get it.
