Anyone have more info? --------- LIMA, Peru — A village in southern Peru has been struck by a mysterious illness after a meteorite crashed to the earth around midday Saturday, an official with the local health department said. Villagers heard an explosion and saw a fireball that many thought was an airplane crashing near their remote village, located in the high Andes department of Puno in the Desaguadero region, near the border with Bolivia, according to a report from AFP. Residents later complained of headaches and vomiting brought on by a "strange odor," according to health department official Jorge Lopez. ADVERTISEMENT Around midday Saturday, villagers were startled by an explosion and a fireball that many were convinced was an airplane crashing near their remote village, located in the high Andes department of Puno in the Desaguadero region, near the border with Bolivia. Residents complained of headaches and vomiting brought on by a "strange odor," local health department official Jorge Lopez told Peruvian radio RPP. Seven policemen who went to check on the reports also became ill and had to be given oxygen before being hospitalized, Lopez said. Rescue teams and experts were dispatched to the scene, where the meteorite left a 100-foot-wide (30-meter-wide) and 20-foot-deep (six-meter-deep) crater, said local official Marco Limache. "Boiling water started coming out of the crater and particles of rock and cinders were found nearby. Residents are very concerned," he said. http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20070918/sc_afp/peruhealthoffbeat --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Once we got to the point where twenty/something's needed a place on the corner that changed the oil in their cars we were doomed . . ." -NickDG
Squeak 17 #2 September 19, 2007 could it be radiation sickness? You are not now, nor will you ever be, good enough to not die in this sport (Sparky) My Life ROCKS! How's yours doing?
1969912 0 #3 September 19, 2007 Yeah. If they started vomiting right away, and it was due to radiation, then the dose would have to be pretty high, and very sick (maybe dead) people would result in a week or so.
