Who understands proxy servers?...

Recommended Posts

I am stuck using our shitty dorm internet which pisses me off on a constant basis. I go to a college in Silicon Valley and my dorms are set up with low-end DSL. UGH.

Anyway, my biggest peeve is they have something incredibly stupid set up, somewhere, I don't know. All I know is I can't use a third-party mail client, and that is an incredibly huge pain in the ass since I sent a LOT of emails every day, most including attachments, and using my web-based email doesn't allow for me to hit send and walk away. It needs to load....load....load..... then once it's done loading, I can send, instead of the other way around.

So anyway, I have been in touch with people who understand servers more than me and they tell me I just need to route my mail client and web browser through a proxy server.... but I can't figure out how to do it with my mail client. Anybody know how to route my third-party mail client through a proxy server so I can save myself about an hour a day's worth of frustration?

Okay, I dug a bit deeper and may have come across something...

I forgot to mention I am running OS X if that makes a large difference here.

Apple sorta helped. I understand the dumbed-down paragraph, and get the general idea of the gibberish at the bottom. Perhaps this will help somebody with greater knowledge help me....
