Incarus Omega?

Recommended Posts

Hi
I know, this is another one of those 'what canopy' posts. Sorry:P

There is a rig for sale in clasifieds http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/classifieds/detail_page.cgi?ID=36893&d=1 with an Icarus Omega 159 main.

I was wondering what kind of a canopy they are and got the impression they are a high performance canopy for swooping etc, but in their website they say "At lighter wing loadings (below .9 PSF) it is a good student canopy or first canopy or for someone who just wants to take it easy. At heavier wing loadings (up to 1.5 PSF) it will get zippy and fun while maintaining cruizy openings and landings. Being a 7-cell of conventional construction the pack volume is very small."

I weigh 135-40 lbs so that would put me at a wingloading of about 1.0 - 1.1 on it, which I would have thought would have been nearer the "below .9 PSF) it is a good student canopy or first canopy" side of things. However on Incarus's weight table http://www.icaruscanopies.aero/canopies/Omega/techdata.htm
that puts me at "Cauthion! Highly spirited!" Is this correct?

I have 62 jumps and was wondering if this would be worth considering or if the eliptical canopy would be too much to handle for a first rig?

I always have nice stand up landings and I am currently jumping an old PD190 and there is no rush to downsize as I have acess to a sabre1 170 (uni club kit). Obviously before buying any kit I will ask my CCI's and instructors advice - I was just wondering about the canopy charachteristics and if it was even worth contacting the seller:)

Hey Kat, I jumped an Omega 170 at around 1.0 from around jumps 25 to 50, never had any sort of problem with it. I think it is slightly more spirited than a Spectre (turns a bit faster, dives a bit more) but I def don't think its more HP than a Sabre2 or a Safire2.

I always had soft openings, not many linetwists and soft standup landings. IMO if you handle the Sabre 170 ok then the Omega will probably be absolutely fine.

(disclaimer, I can't say too much about its handling 'cos I was very low experience when I jumped it - on the other hand, I was very low experience when I jumped it and it never once made me think it was too much.)
Do you want to have an ideagasm?

I was out in NZ renting it from the DZ. I had 50 jumps when I came back to the Uk and had to find my own second hand gear. I would have been more than happy to keep jumping the omega:)

If I add 20# to your weight for exit weight = 160#. Starting from 160 at the bottom of the chart and moving up to canopy size 160, it would appear to be "Normal Operating Range."
Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard.

FYI
I e-mailed Icarus and explained that this had been talked about here and if they could give me a reply that I could post so here is Icarus's reply

The Safire-1 and the Omega are measured differently to PD canopies. As a rough guide a Safire-1 or Omega is about the same size as the next size down - eg A Safire 149 is about a 135. A Safire 119 is about a 109. Use an equation of 8%.
The Safire-2 and Omni (Omni supercedes Omega) are measured the same as
PD.

All other Icarus Canopies are measured the same as PD.

The reason for the difference is due to Precision measuring their canopies differently. Icarus have always measured the same as PD however when we originally commenced in the USA, Precision were building parachutes for us under license and were doing it using their size equations and not Icarus/PD's.

We have therefore had to wait to supercede these models to change the size equation.

Only the Safire and Omega were affected.
