Used Cypres help

Recommended Posts

I'm totally confused... if someone is selling a used Cypres that needs an 8 year and batteries, how can I tell what a fair price is to pay for this? how much do those services cost? If the cypres is $300, what would be my grand total after all is said and done, if it was DOM in 10/97, and needs an 8 year and batteries?
What is the schedule of Cypres maintenance on the old system vs the new Cypres 2? I'm confused. Thanks!!!!!!

Hey!

I just bought a used cypress and I understand a bit about the maintenance process.

Basically a Cypres 1 has to go for batteries every 2 yrs and scheduled maintenance every 4. Batteries can be replaced by your rigger.

Cypres 2 has a 4 year maintenance for battery and scheduled maintenance. So overall maintenance costs go down.

As for price, you can go to:

http://www.cypres-usa.com/usedcypres.asp

The pricecs for battery($70) and maintenance($160) are also on this site.

The original cypres sold for anywhere from $1200 to $850 depending on year and exchange rate. At the end just before cypres II came out they were about $950, IIRC. This is the value I use. It is one point of debate between buyer and seller.

Batteries are $75 to $90 installed depending on who does it. I'd use SSK'S price of $85. Not sure anybody does it for $70 anymore. They cost me more than that with shipping.

Service is $160, PLUS shipping two directions. About $14 in MI with $1000 insurance, one way.

Trade in value is $80.

Eight year or four year, price for service, if nothing unusual, is $160. Plus $85 battery plus shipping, getting the cypres in the air will be around $275 depending on shipping.

Thanks Terry, that's the info a novice cypres buyer needs to ensure he's not getting ripped... I guess an airworthy cypres after 8 year check and battery for $600 is still a good deal vs buying a brand new one at 1200-1400.
The inputs are much appreciated.

Disregarding shipping -

For $600 + $85 (batteries) - $80 (trade-in value) that Cypres 1 will cost you $172 a year for the 3.5 years left (it's good through 10/2009 + 3 months).

For $1200 + $160 * 2 (4-year checks) - $80 the Cypres 2 will cost you $120 a year.

While you'll be out less cash for the Cypres 1 it will cost you $182 more over that time than if you'd bought a Cypres 2.

This assumes you make fewer than 250 jumps a year (Cypres 1 batteries are legal foir 500 jumps), don't get it wet (Cypres 1 is not water proof), etc.

You are buying a used cypres that has 1/3 of it's useful life left and paying the maintenance and battery costs for $600. Does that make sense? The cypres calculator shows a value of $232 (then you shell out $260+ to make the unit meet the FAA regulations). If it didn't need service work the most I would pay is $400.

It's a buyers market. The value of a used cypres is declining every day. If you're willing to go $600 for a used cypres, spend another $600 and buy a new cypres 2.
