Don't move to the UK, not many people drive automatics over here... I heard it was because English people are more co-ordinated or something

I heard it's because English people spent all their money on dental care, they can't afford automatics. :D

but the only stipulation was that it had to be a stick. I was the not-so-proud owner of a light blue Pinto as my first car.

My only stipulations were stick, brand new & under budget.

I was the very-proud owner of a purple Geo Metro as my first car.B| My BMW & Lexus-driving friends quickly named it "The Barney Mobile".:P

Kelel, my father skipped the parking lot and had me drive straight from home onto the highway.:| I made sure to annoy the hell out of every car behind me at a stoplight on the way there.B| I think the added pressure of fingers flicking me off and horns blasting really did the trick. Parking lots are SO forgiving.:P

Similarly, if it weren't for taxiways it probably would have taken me a lot longer to learn to land from a skydive on my feet.B|

Wow, so I leave for 36 hours and come back to this. :D:D:D

I appreciate all of the information. I'll keep working on it (because I have to). But unless I just happen to fall in love with a car that just happens to be a manual transmission, I don't see myself ever buying one. :D

And if I move to the UK, I'd have to switch hands anyway, so I won't worry about that. :P

Besides gas mileage, increased speed at the starting gate, and being able to brag to your friends that you can drive one :D, WTF is so great about a stupid manual transmission? :D:D:D

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRGGH!

In addition to the facts you already mentioned, if you are one that downshifts like I do, your brakes last a LOT longer.

I dont brag to anyone about it cuz who the hell cares? :)
With a stick you have much better control of the vehicle.

I have never, and will never, buy an automatic trans, unless I suffer some permanent disability that forever prevents me from being able to drive a stick.

Downshifting also comes in handy when you spot a cop and realize you're speeding a little bit. Instead of hitting the brakes and drawing attention to yourself you can just slow down by downshifting!

My new car is an automatic, I miss having a manual. I learned how to push start my old car by myself, that came in handy a few times.

You can still draw attention by downshifting, in the daytime, if the shift causes the front end to dip, like it would when you brake. Usually in cases where you're going too fast for a smooth downshift.

I agree. I love a stick shift in a sports car. When I bought my EX Coupe I seriously thought about getting a Stick but the reality is with Atlanta Stop and Go Traffic a HUGE part of everyday life, A Stick would SUCK.

Yep... I fucking hate when I get stopped in a traffic jam and we're inching along and I have to continually work the clutch and gas... I usually need a hot tub after that. :P

alternatively you *could* just not exceed the speed limit in the first place... :D:D:P

Yeah, driving a trailer even without a manual tranny can be a pain in the ass. Just takes practice. :)

Other than backing it up, what's the big deal about driving a trailer? I don't recall ever having to "learn" how to do that, even after I was driving with a manual.

OTOH, I had a bitch of a time learning to simply drive with a stick shift (when I was in my early 20's).

I guess these things are different for different people.

It depends on the length of the trailer you're pulling. ;) I doubt you could just hop in a big rig with a 53' trailer and not need practice. But who knows.

The benefit of the manual transmission lies in the driving experience. So, if you don't enjoy that aspect of driving, use automatic transmissions.

Generally, anything that can be doe with a manual can be done better and more efficiently with an automatic.

Plus, replacing clutches sucks.

Well, maybe someday you'll change your mind. I was SUPER frustrated when my dad bought a manual for me and my brother to share when I was 17. I hated learning, it was frustrating, I was pissed at my brother for picking it out. But once I learned it's fun fun fun! B|:)
